6870 or 7850

Thread Starter
These two seem pretty close in performance. Which would you choose and why?

My budget is $150, but I might go a little higher if you can give me a good enough reason.
Like you said, they're pretty close in performance, but in the areas where there's a clear difference, the 7850 will always be better (http://www.anandtech.com/bench/Product/540?vs=549). If you can somehow get them for the same price, I'd get the 7850. If the price difference is significant enough for you to consider getting the 6870, just get the 6870 because you'll still be happy with it.

Hope this helps.

1. The 7850 is faster and uses less power
2. The 7850 is newer tech, futureproof i.e. ( Pci e 3.0/28nm)
3. Most 7850s overclock very well (7870+ performance )

Here's a comparison for you on strictly a benching perspective. http://www.anandtech.com/bench/Product/540?vs=549

Personally I'd get a 7850. It's newer and therefore will be supported longer, as well as it runs cooler and draws less power (or about the same under load as the benches show). Plus, there's more options to choose from (company wise) for your 7850, since some companies have already discontinued 6xxx series cards.

You are very wrong . the HD 6870 is no match for a HD 7850. HD 7850 at 860 Mhz clocks is faster than HD 6950. But it has fantastic overclocking headroom and performance scaling. HD 7850 (1 Ghz) matches GTX 570. HD 7850 at 1.2 Ghz is faster than HD 7870 and matches GTX 580. In the latest DX11 games like BF3 the HD 7850 (1.2 Ghz) will be more than 50% faster than HD 6870 (1 Ghz).

1920 x 1200

HD 7850 (1 Ghz) - 100
GTX 570 - 103
HD 7870 - 111

With the 12.11b drivers the performance has improved even more.

The difference in price seems to be ~$20 looking at the two in the same brand. I'm not worried about $20.

I'm mainly getting this to run Planetside 2. With my current card, I'm getting about 60fps with everything on low and 1920x1080. I would like those framerates with all quality settings on high.

Get the HD 7850 2GB even if it costs a little bit more. Games like Skyrim with mods, BF3 are easily exceeding 1 GB VRAM. Its not a good idea to buy such a powerful card and then cripple it with just 1GB VRAM.

Going from a 6870 to a 7870, I can tell you the difference is night and day. Throw in the latest superb driver increase.....there is no question. The 6870 is still a nice card, but OC the 7850 and you're gold.
