Fixing Broken Pins - Phenom 955 - Page 2

my cable had 5 solid copper wires about the same thickness as a pin. as long as its copper and about the size of a pin it should work out fine

I think they were a lot thinner than a pin. Im not really sure hwo to describe it. Each of the 5 cables in the ethernet cable, were made up of like a half dozen copper wires.

My 965 works this way for 2 years. I just removed some pins from an old athlon and put them on the mobo and it works just fine like the video

I re-inserted one of the pins but it was too small to reach the cpu, so I stuck in wire. It'd also be a real gamble to take my perfectly fine athlon ii and chip up pins from it. For all I knew the chip had been fried out by a previous user!

I mean I'm sitting here surfing around and stuff, so everything seems fine. I'm going to apply some TIM (i just slapped on my cm 212, it had plenty of leftover tim from earlier), make everything tight....

but are there any sorts of drivers or anything that I need to update or change because I changed from an athlon ii to phenom ii?

no cpus dont require drivers, just make sure bios and mobo drivers are up to date. once you get new tim on, you could try giving it a quick prime95 run to test it at full load. if it works after that, then id assume your just fine

haha. I mean $30 for a phenom ii is quite a deal. I didn't realize any of the pins were broken, I just thought they were all bent only, but i've made it work out anyways.

I couldnt get the system to boot when i enalbed custom p-states (allows you to be able to overclock, didnt actually increase vid, multi, or nb vid or multi at all). I thought it may have been because of the pins, but by giving a cpu over voltage of +.1v through the motherboard, it's able to boot up, no problems!

So now I just did a very simple x17 from x16 multiplier (i have an increase in voltage anyways) increase, and will make sure this thing is ~8hour prime95 blend stable, to make sure the chip is okay. I'll be making a blog of my progress at:

http://www.teamliquid.net/blogs/viewblog.php?id=380420

I can copy/paste all that here on a blog or thread if you guys would like. basically a blog specifically tracking progress and how im tweaking the settings. Guides on overclocking, unfortunately, dont exactly tell you "raise core fid to increase the multiplier", they just say raise the multi, so sometimes how to practically apply what you read in overclock guides can be just as confusing as learning how to overclock. it was for me anyways.

edit: on a side note, Advanced Clock Calibration (ACC) causes and caused my my cpu temps to be displayed as total whack and wayy under ambient. This was an issue with my athlon ii was well, i didnt realize acc was to blame for it. Odd thing, in bios my cpu temps were listed perfectly accurately, just any monitoring program would show core voltage as 0-10*C. I just realized it was ACC's fault because when i first booted up without changing any bios settings, my cpu temps seemed normal and ambient+, but when i tweaked it all, it was 0*C idle and i realized it must have been one of the bios settings and was able to narrow it down (odd, because at default, bios was acc auto with my athlon ii... must be because of some bios update i did since i overclocked my athlon ii). Will have to email biostar about that one, i had a looong back and forth with their tech department trying to figure that out and we never did lol.

On a quick p95 test, my VRM temps didnt go above 40*C by the way. The temp diode is underneath the heatsink on the vrms. CPU temperatures maxed at 44*C and idle around 30*C. I understand that I dont want to go above 55*C on load (my system is set to shutdown at 60*C).

Nice find there, the copper from the cat5 cables are fine as long as they contact properly. They're essetinally the same composite as the pins. If you got yourself a C3 revision then you should be good to go up to 4GHz thumb.gif

I mean the end result was all straightened out, with 5 missing pins.
Quote:
The pins missing are H2, AL3, AL4, and AK30.

and C1

so just imagine a pefectly straight phenom ii with h2, al3, al4, ak30, and c1 pins missing!

I thought about taking pics but honestly you probably couldnt really notice much or it'd just be 'oh it looks normal except i can see a few missing pins, maybe not because of resolution' and the copper wire into the motherboard socket wouldnt really be noticeable.

I know for sure it's a c2 revision, unfortunately. I almost didn't buy the chip because of that (i knew it was c2 when i bought it, id code was -DGI instead of DGM). So i stopped bidding up to $31, and that happened to be the winning bid. But, oh well, c2 doesnt mean it wont overclock as well necessarily, it just means it needs way more voltages, which im entirely comfortable with. Oh no, I fried out a phenom ii with 5 missing pins and 100 bent pins that is a pain in the ass to wiggle into the socket and has zero resale value!

I will never buy a non-bent non-broken-pin cpu again ^^

Prime95 blend, 6 hours, no errors, priority 10 (ive read about priority, i know 'that guy' says priority shouldnt be messed with, but priority 10 always returns errors in a quicker period of time, and im not using the pc during the test so it doesnt matter, and i think he said keep it on priority 1 when searching for mersenne primes, not stresstesting, and when using the pc during p95 testing).

I think that's good enough for stable. I think 24 hour p95 test is a bit much, but 8 hour p95 blend i think is a good indicator of system stability right? ill move into overclocking as each night draws.

my temps got up to 51*C vrm, 41*C phenom ii.

Awesome man, I've never even looked into how you would repair a completely missing pin before (never broken one tongue.gif), and while I often wondered if this would work, I had no idea that it actually would. I learned something today smile.gif.

Congrats on the score.
