Safe Laptop Temperatures for 24/7?

Got my new IdeaPad Y480 biggrin.gif It runs SCII on max using an external monitor, so I'm happy hehe. Since it's got a nice i7-3630QM, I figured I'd donate my CPU cycles to the World Community Grid, I'm sure it's leagues ahead of what even my old desktop could accomplish (i3-550). I've been running it for a few days now monitoring the temperatures. I've got it on a CM U2 cooling pad, and it idles around 35-40C and averages around 85C on full load continuously (checked in the morning after it ran World Community Grid with 100% CPU cycle access overnight), although at one point one of the cores hit 90C. I've been looking through Google and the answer seems to be that it's safe all the way into the 90's, however most of these were just "it hit X temp while gaming" questions, and I'm wondering if things change if I'm talking about running it at these temperatures continuously, stopping only when I go to class for an hour here and there.

BTW I'm using CoreTemp 1.0 RC3 to monitor temps. Is that good? Any recommendations for temp monitoring?

I have some MX-4 here with me... although accessing the heatsink is a quite, erm, involved process (basically dismantling the entire laptop) and I don't want to void my warranty if these temps are perfectly fine.

my G73j(or whatever) Asus laptop hit those temps when I was using it for the Chimp folding event. Ran it the whole event around those temps, still working fine.

Those temp's are HOT for a CPU to my knowledge. I wouldn't be donating the CPU power on a laptop- it's going to kill it eventually thumbsdownsmileyanim.gif

in general laptop parts are made to be more durable at high temperatures for the simple fact that they are generally limited in their cooling capability.

Should be fine thumb.gif

Yeah that's what I thought too, I've heard you want to keep CPUs in the 60's if you can, anything beyond that and your cooling is not sufficient. However I've also heard the mobile CPUs can handle higher temps, since the form factor of laptops doesn't lend themselves to cooling and chipmakers know this. Of course as Abraham Lincoln said, don't believe everything you read on the internet, so I figured I'd come here and see if anyone has some more in-depth knowledge on this.

Well unless you plan to open up the laptop and put some better cooling on it, just use it. It will downclock if it starts to get too hot or shutdown when it reaches critical temps

mobile chipsets are not the same as desktop ones. Sure cooler is always better but laptop parts are engineered to be able to withstand higher temperatures due to the form factor.

I had a g73 and an m17xr2 and they both into low 90s on the cpu while doing video converting or anything super intensive, and they worked completely fine for as long as I had them

Download core temp

Look at the TjMax

is the current temp above that?

If yes then it is too hot and it should go into thermal shutdown but if no you are fine.

I had an old AMD laptop that would hit 106C while gaming, still works perfectly

I had a Lenovo y470 (i7 2630qm + gt 550m)

The CPU idled the at 42ish and the GPU @ 33, When playing games, the temperatures would QUICKLY climb to almost 90 as well.

I think Lenovo was ambitious in designing all the power in a 14 inch form factor, but the temperatures suffered because of it. I had quite a few heat related issues with the Y470, which is why I got rid of it before the warranty ran out.

No... Just... Just no... rolleyes.gif

90*C is fine. Your machine is reaching temperatures that aren't going to kill it. I would invest in a cooler if you're THAT worried about it. The Cooler Master U2 is a good choice. smile.gif
