While I despise Valve and Steam, I'm hoping this is the catalyst to hopefully move most PC gaming to Linux.
I think it is great the Valve wants people to take PC Gaming on Linux more seriously and are willing to invest the money necessary to do so. The more people that have access to Valve's amazing portfolio of video games the better!

However, as I said in a post that has since mysteriously disappeared, this isn't about Valve supporting only Linux and dropping support for Windows 8 (which they couldn't afford to do fiscally), but about supporting both OS and making *their* portfolio of games as multi-platform as possible, thus being able to reach more gamers while being able to offer something other digital distribution services (Origin, Impulse, etc) cannot. Having said that, this really mean's *nothing* unless Valve can somehow get all the developers (and publishers) on the Linux bandwagon, and I just *don't* see that happening anytime soon, and certainly not before the next iteration of Windows comes out (post 8).

Anyways, good news for Linux user's though!thumb.gif

Unless Valve is willing to be what Microsoft is to Windows on Linux, then hurray for a crappy platform focus switch.
Let alone, Gabe has already given support to Apple and they aren't complaining about the app store. What the heck is going on with this guy? Maybe the beard needs to go.

Did you even watch the video? Gabe Newell isn't even the speaker, and Drew Bliss did not say Steam is not working on Windows 8.

as much as i love linux, any reasonable person knows this is a pointless gesture. nice for linux users, but probably more or less meaningless in terms of profits for valve

Steam on Linux will finally allow me to chat/play with my friends so I'm pretty hyped to see how things will go. Gabe has been very outspoken over this, but I don't see why Windows users would even care considering they're already on a platform that gets 99% of the glory for PC gaming. Can't you just be happy to have more people to interact with?

Self-serving? He's just adding Linux support, not discontinuing it for Windows/OSX and forcing people to switch to Linux.

Haha what? Apple and Microsoft have both shown that they plan to move to a closed system where phones, tablets, laptops, desktops, and servers all use the same OS. Steve Ballmer and Bill Gates were both unapologetic when they said it in a few of last month's many Windows 8 press releases. Apple has been busy making OSX behave more like the iOS platform.

Windows 7 will last long enough to not be replaced by Linux. The moment MS kills Windows 7 DirectX Updates its the moment they will lose the gaming Community. Windows 9 has has to be like Windows 7.

He is talking about the future of windows 8, microsoft could potentially release an update that eradicates his software because it wasn't verified through the microsoft app store/ ecosystem. it doesn't say that valve is going to stop supporting windows, they are simply widening their available options. I think steam for linux is long overdue.

But it wont, it is Vista in a nut shell.

Vista wasn't the greatest.
7 took ideas from it and made it better.
8 isn't the greatest.
9 will take ideas from it and make it better.

I think the main thing Microsoft is doing wrong it making it so we don't have options like booting straight into desktop mode and disabling the "windows 8" interface without having to buy a program like start8 to do so.

If they did those two things, I'd buy it.

Back OT, This is great that they are attempting to support other platforms but I just don't see the windows 8 marketplace taking over steam. People are comparing the win8 marketplace to the app store on mac osx. STEAM STILL WORKS ON MAC OSX. STEAM WILL STILL WORK ON WIN8. They wont remove support it's just that people who don't know about steam and like games will just buy them from the app store / win8 marketplace which will remove some market share from Steam, meaning valve are pissed.
