[PCGN] Valve on why they're favouring Linux over Windows 8 - Page 17

A lot of F2P games have their own client, social interface, DRM, etc. Those are closed platforms as well. A closed platform by the likes of Microsoft and Apple would basically demolish the competition. Do you want two choices or many choices?

I'm all for choice, but I don't saw MS or Apple closing their x86 platforms (Steam doesn't even run on ARM) from 3rd-party app. If they'd do it, I would likely switch to Linux. They're only promoting their own software on their own OS; I don't see a big problem.

I think Valve don't like competition and they're just using the hate on Win8 to get some publicity. But, if they keep Steam as a good platform that I have a good experience with, they shouldn't fear that Win8 store that much; it's metro-apps only with link to the company website for x86.

I was just about to use Linux as my main media/basic OS on my second hard drive but later found out that Windows was just better in every aspect; so I formatted that junk off my system. The user experience on Linux is poor, and only offers that placebo effect for the haters or those exploring alternative OSs. And why is it poor? Because of the crap support. Linux on supported platforms, like Android, OSs for game consoles, etc., are much better, why, because of the support they get.

It's not a good move. They should be putting their efforts into communicating with Microsoft and working on new titles or episodes instead of baseless fear mongering while being hypocritical about it on other platforms.

Valve isn't claiming that Windows 8 is a closed platform and they are simply looking into Linux as an alternative if Windows becomes a closed platform.
It seems like the majority of you guys didn't read the article or view the video.
Some of you are simply hating on Valve or Linux.

Then Gabe's comments saying that Windows 8 is the worst platform ever for gaming (or something to that extent) doesn't mean anything and has no bearing on what they're saying?

As said, they're capitalizing on the FUD and fearmongering around Windows 8, and Gabe Newell was one of the major players in spreading that FUD.

If I said it once, I said it a thousand times.

Make my entire Steam library playable (or a good 80% chunk of it) and I will make the move to Linux on all my computers.

Come on,steam just can't ignore Chinese Linux (mips system)
If china was to embrace that is steam would loose a big market this way they only need to learn mips .same for NVIDIA ,they went hardcore on Linux just in case Chinese customer go with their national standard.i bet the rest of the world is just a bonus for steam

The amount of fail in this thread is rediculous..

Love steam/ Love Linux/Love Windows 8 or Hate Steam/Hate Linux/Hate Windows 8 it doesn't matter and everyone Should be happy that there is more choice available for everyone to decide how they want their computing experience.

Linux users and even would-be linux users have been waiting for something like this to happen for a long time. Windows users have had this since the beginning so what is the problem? Are windows users afraid? seems like it to me. I enjoy all Operating systems and have just recently after years of deciding if I want to go Linux exclusively or not. I decided that the only thing I needed windows for was for games and if I couldn't get a game working on Linux then I didn't need the game to begin with but with steam doing it's thing I may not miss out on anything. Breaking Free form windows has been a breath of fresh air (Literally).

There is way too much hate on these forums.. Community divided.

Yes, just like every other successful ARM based operating system where successful software eco systems rely on quality controlled software that uses pre-set criteria to provide familiarity and intuitive use across all apps.

Or is it supposed to be different now because MS is having a go?

The point is neither Steam or any of the software it provides to the user is compatible with ARM based chips so the line of argument is moot as this area is not what Valve are actually addressing.

In the video the Valve guy clearly makes statements regarding how open Windows "used to be in the past" and how Steam would be "hard to do" on Windows in modern times, attempting to project the image that Windows has become closed and that the Steam model is would be hard to start up in modern times.

Yet the only reason Steams model is "hard to do" right now, is literally because of Steam itself and how dominant it is in terms of running a closed gaming platform within another platform.

The reality is that no other company can compete with Steam because the Steam model in and of itself literally makes it so that once a person has amassed a certain amount of investment in their game library, that they literally cannot leave or feel inconvenienced to leave. Just as people who are heavily invested in android or ios will find it hard to move to the other platform. Even if there is a"better platform", they couldn't easily move away completely even if they wanted to anyway, lest they give up their current investments.

Once again, using the technique of "projection", where you try make people scared or scornful of something or someone else, to hide the fact that you are actually doing the very thing you'd like others to be scared or scornful of the "other" entity.

Ya, no.

The USA has the world's most buying power. If you want to make money you cater to Americans.
