[PCGN] Valve on why they're favouring Linux over Windows 8 - Page 3

I switched back to Xubuntu from Arch Linux partially for the Steam Linux Beta, so I hope I get in. tongue.gif Can't wait!

It's not about Linux/Windows/OSX replacing each other, it's about having more choice as a consumer.

Maybe, but that isn't the case with me. For the longest time, I refused to use anything but Microsoft products, but over the past 4-6 years, their idea of what the future of computing should look like has slowly diverted from mine.

More and more, Microsoft wants to become Apple Computer, with everything locked up and under their control and if you don't like it ... TOUGH. With Windows 8, they have cemented that (ie their stupid online store, all the stupid Facebook type integration, location tracking, and no "Classic View").

To hell with that.

That is why I am biting off Linux more and more, and moving away from Microsoft.

It STARTED with having to pay $400 for their off the shelf Office suite, when you can get something nearly as good for free ... heck, I'd have paid $100 for Open Office. What Microsoft charges is highway robbery ... unless you are a student, or work some silly angle to scam them.

Well, that's why there are a lot of people who just pirate Windows.
I am annoyed that I have to pay $100 for Windows, when there is a better operating system out there that just lacks compatibility with software. It would probably be better for everyone if everything was on Linux, but that will never happen.

Exactly. Windows 8 was designed top to bottom with touch in mind, the keyboard and mouse was more than likely implemented just so you can use it as a desktop OS.

Also, I've seen numerous Windows 8 commercials, but I have yet to see one that someone is using a keyboard and mouse or even a mouse cursor for that matter.

Does MS make a version of Office for Linux? I can't switch over if it doesn't. I've played around with Ubuntu and I liked it, but if I can't work on it, what's the point.

Just run office in linux.. install it using Wine. Playonlinux and crossover can make it painless.

Works great wink.gif

and open office is a POOR substitute at best.

Sorry Ive been on Win 8 for over a week and I love it. Lot of whining and ignorance out there. Steam works fine on it as do my DOSbox games. Lots of crying by people is all I see,

Gabe likes linux? great.. Get him to get developers besides the stupid source games to actually port it over and give me an alternative to MS office that actually works and is intuitive I'll switch. Anyone complaining about Windows 8 and it being not intuitive should give open office a try when you're trying to do spreadsheets and docx.

Who even uses open office? Most have switched to LibreOffice which is by far better than Open office. Like I said above.. if You need MS Office install it with wine or with Playonlinux/Crossover (which uses wine) to make it painless.

I would switch to Linux in a heartbeat if it was more intuitive like Windows. Half of the time I install things I need to run some sort of code via the command prompt in Linux, half the things I do don't work (Like all of my steam games) or most of the problems I constantly use don't work like they should. I've never really given Linux a real good 10 day + run though. I know someone who's a huge Linux fan and he's super excited for Steam on Linux. He builds PC's but he's a minimalist. He still runs an Athlon X2 64, 2GB of DDR2 and a 9800GT. He did get a 60GB SSD though.
