I buy retail games. I like my boxed copies sitting on my shelf knowing that they will be playable 10/15 years down the road. However, with most publishers having the bright idea of chaining boxed copies to crap like steam, origin etc., I simply don't buy modern games. In fact, in the last month alone, I spent about $70 on eBay and got big boxed versions of Icewind Dale (with the cloth map), Tiberian Sun, Alpha Centauri, and Baldur's Gate. I also got Fallout 2, but that's only in a jewel case. The most DRM they have is a simple CD check, which is a lot better than signing away your rights to a product and having to jump through hoops just to launch a game.

I am playing L4D2 through wine, works just fine; for the other ones, I'm not sure.

We want to continue developing in open platforms and so we’re looking around, and obviously Linux has become a very viable alternate platform. So we are now looking into doing Steam for Linux and supporting as many of our Steam games for Linux as we can.

We want to remove one roadblock that people have with Linux usage and keep the open platform alive. If Microsoft goes the way Apple has and Windows and Macintosh are, both completely closed ecosystems, Linux really is the best alternative for everybody. So we want to help it be as good a platform as possible.

Can you imagine a future where OS X and Windows are both small, niche ecosystems and everyone is gaming and working using an entirely open platform? How awesome would THAT be! biggrin.gif

you don't need to care. use windows be happy, or use a console.

everything has to start somewhere. Linux isn't meant to be a complete windows / xbox / playstation replacement, but over time it will become a decent alternative to the alternative gamer

i think its great news. Windows is going to become extremely walled, along with Mac, ios and the consoles that already are. not just with games but with the way you want your system to feel will be locked to the MS 'feel' or the Apple 'look' with only approved wallpapers, icon sets, boot processes into their ecosystem, single boot, single music app, no mods etc..

i just cant understand why a PC gamer would object to steam on Linux? a PC Gamer, games on a PC .. i.e the hardware is PC, the O/S is just preference. Its actually the lifeline a PC gamer needs in order to survive the DRM / tablet invasion!

Aren't you faster if you can see what you're clicking on instead of your hand getting in the way of your vision?

Or how about you create a Steam startup? Instead of the desktop you boot straight to steam in TV mode. Now you could have a portable steam client that boots on anything, give it large enough storage and you would have a portable Steam that runs on any computer.

now that's an awesome idea.. an os tailored by gamers for gamers, every line of code optimised for 3D performance. The community will solve together any bugs/problems without waiting for Microsoft or Apple.. I really, really like this idea.
The only real problem is direct x. The beauty of direct x lays in the support that Microsoft gives the gaming companies when they are writing a game.
The same can't be said for open cl/gl. Does any of you know how to overcome this issue?
