[BBW] Apple Said to Be Exploring Switch From Intel for Mac

Apple engineers have grown confident that the chip designs used for its mobile devices will one day be powerful enough to run its desktops and laptops, said three people with knowledge of the work, who asked to remain anonymous because the plans are confidential. Apple began using Intel chips for Macs in 2005.

I don't see this being a very good plan. They'll call it revolutionary but it probably won't even touch Haswell

Maybe it'll work if they bring their prices down...
The average lower end mac user doesn't really do much that's processor intensive.

I wouldn't ditch Intel though.
Not when you have customers shelling out 10,000 USD for a Mac workstation...

Apple's chip designs are good, but they're not even close to as good as Intel's offerings.

Apple just wants to control all levels of production. Then they can fully dictate their prices, and no one can say a thing about it.

Either their engineers know that their consumers don't do anything hardware intensive or they're stupid and alienating the ones that do. If they think there mobile market, with a GPU that barely even competes with the low end APUs from AMD, let alone, their processors not even remotely close in performance, to replace their desktop workstation market is probably the most ridiculous thing I've heard today. But I agree with everything else, the applications most Mac users use will work absolutely fine on their mobile chips.

Good riddance I say. If they go with something other than intel, that means apple buyers won't be able to use bootcamp + windows. Sounds good to me.

Kind of makes me think of Samsung's Chromebook with the A15, but that helps it maintain the $250 price tag, but charging MBP prices for something with an ARM CPU is outrageous
