[BBW] Apple Said to Be Exploring Switch From Intel for Mac - Page 4

That may not matter but the power users, the one whose advice the average mac user seeks, the one that fixes their broken computers and network problems, will out the Intel-less macs as the pure junk they're sure to be. Techies set the beat that the rest of the average users march to. Apple as a premium brand is only as good as its worst products, and so much of the company's value comes from the perceived value of the brand itself. I'm not sure they would allow their products to become this inferior to their competitors and risk it all for slightly higher margins. At best, this is a tactical rumor to gain advantage in some back room deals going on behind the scenes. How do I know that? Because Apple is not suicidal.

haha: this is obviously a crazy idea...but it will happen in one of our parallel universes at least
Maybe in a parallel universe where AMD didn't sell its fab. Apple buying AMD would be like apple buying a llama ranch... absolutely positively no point.

I'm ok with this. It annoyed the crap out of me when Apple originally switched from PPC to Intel. Before that, the only way to run Mac OS was either buy an Apple PC or run an emulator. Now anyone can build a 'hackintosh' and run OS X. Or you can buy a Mac and run Windows on it. There's no longer as large of a degree of exclusion as there once was, and yet their prices remain horribly high. The prices are easier to justify when you have a unique product, not just another rebranded PC.

It does not matter what CPU is in it, it is still a PC (Personal Comptuer, does not mean it comes with windows)

...I can't imagine this is with their entire product line... Right? I mean... That would be absurd...

But I agree with everything else, the applications most Mac users use will work absolutely fine on their mobile chips.

i bet the new ipad chip compares favorably to the chip in intel ulv processors, especially graphics

The HD4000? If they perform better then AMD's APU, then I doubt it.

Since when did mobile computing and power computing belong in the same sentence?

What makes you think Intel holds the keys to the future of mobile computing?

If Apple is considering this move all I can say is AMD and ARM is moving in the right direction with Intel playing catch-up.

I think Apple just doesn't want to be in bed with one company for too long...

This is probably not a good move for Apple... ARM can not compete on the desktop scene where actual performance is necessary.

This is great although I'd prefer it if they went with AMD. Intel have too much of a market share right now, someone needs to reduce it.
