[Microsoft] Microsoft Surface 32 gig only has 16 gig free space - Page 4

Yea, I feel we're at the point where memory is cheap enough for them to make sure you get close to the same GB as advertised after system is installed. I guess they've gotten away with it for so long and its technically correct. But it is rather shady to advertise as 32GB when they know full well its significantly less.

Would make a great marketing strategy. "When we say your buying a 32GB device, we give you 32GB of space to call your own, to add your music, your videos, your photos, anything you need." I'd be swayed to look more closely at such a company that did this.

Oh well, lifes a garden, dig it.

People who think they're getting close to 32 GB, then find out the OS eats up half of it. Then they're told they can pay extra for more. Not the ideal situation to make a satisfied customer.

1. the tablet is advertised as having 32gb of memory but in reality, you can only use 16gb. how would you feel if you buy something like an ssd that is advertised as 64gb but you only get 32gb of storage?

2. the onboard storage has better compatibility with apps and it is faster than sd card. i myself own a Sandisk Ultra 64GB Class 10 microsdxc and the onboard memory is still faster especially on write speed as the sd card could only do 10mbps

3. it shows how bloated and inefficient in code and size windows is

If a customer is to dumb to realize that a os will take up space, then tough luck to them. Should I be able to complain to OCZ that I only had 46GBs left on my 60GB ssd after windows was installed.

Here’s how much hard disk space you have available out of the box:
The 32 GB version has approximately 16 GB free hard disk space.
The 64 GB version has approximately 46 GB free hard disk space.
WHAT?

Irrelevant^

You have unlimited storage through USB thumbdrive, MicroSD & Skydrive..

So the story goes. Consumer is living in a mine field of fine print and underhanded speccing practices. Oh well, right?

Are you so dumb as to compare apples to oranges? What you do with your SSD after OCZ sells it to you is your business. Someone buying a 32gb surface has no choice; half of the "advertised" storage is gone. People look at the storage when comparing features. It's borderline false advertisement next to iPad or android tablets, since their OS takes up far less space.

if the average joe goes and buys a device that is advertised as 32gb, he is expecting that he can put 32gb worth of stuff on it. he hasnt calculated in his head how much space the OS takes up, or assumed that the 32GB is BEFORE the OS. the general public probably doesnt care/realize that their computer is like this simply because when the HDD is 500+GB that few gigs windows takes up is irrelevant
my 32gb ipod has pretty close to 32gb free, if it was 16gb, people would feak the hell out.
so yea, i understand why people are upset. if you dont have anywhere near 32GB of free space, dont advertise it as a 32GB model!
(I would be interested to know how much free space a 32GB ipad has on it)

28.1 gb on a 32 model iPhone.

This, right here, should make MS hang it's head in shame.
