Need Advice on Upgrades

I posted a similar thread a few months ago, but didn't really receive the response I was looking for.

Here's my current setup:
-i5 750 @ 3.8GHz
-EVGA P55
-EVGA GTX 560 Ti Classified 448-Core
-WD Caviar Green 500GB
-G.SKILL RipJaws 8GB
-Zalman CNPS10x
-Corsair 750W
-Antec 900

So that's what I have to work with. With my birthday and the holidays coming up, I'm very interested in seeing what upgrades can be made with this rig.

Right now, this computer is on the lower-end of what I'd ideally want. I need something that will run anything I throw at it. BO2, BF4, and any other new release for many years to come. I primarily use my rig for gaming, web browsing, and audio file playback, but nothing that requires too much processing power. Even still, I think the i5 750 may be slacking as well as the 560 Ti, but I could be wrong.

Cost is a big issue seeing as though I will be going off to college in less than a year. With that being said, I need to make affordable upgrades with performance increases that will justify the costs.

Any and all input is appreciate. Looking forward to see what you guys have to say.

hm, interesting post. hopefully you'll find my reply helpful

i would first of all upgrade the CPU/mobo to the i5 3570k/z77 motherboard combo from microcenter. if you go ahead today and buy the combo you will be able to get the i5 3570k for $169.99 and a Z77 motherboard (i got the asrock extreme 4) for the cost of $84.99. the asrock extreme 4 is SLI / crossfire compatible, and is SATA 3 compatible aswell so thats good.

total so far would be around $169.99 + $84.99 = $254.98 (+ tax of course)

2nd thing you might want to upgrade is the graphics card if you are leaning towards next gen games as you said i would suggest going for single GTX 670 for now and then going SLI when ever possible. i've seen people going SLI GTX 670 with a 750w powersupply so you should be good on that matter.

3rd throwing an SSD into the mix would also help out your system quite a bunch, but i'd rather stick with upgrading your main components first before getting an SSD since it doesnt really help gaming wise.

IMO, keep the entire rig its still kicking games, just add the ssd, as what Boyd said, for me you can upgrade cpu+mobo, when haswell come early next year. I was thinking maybe it is slacking because you have the green version of WD, this are slow mechanical hard disk.

Thank you for the reply. I am interested in upgrading both my CPU and MOBO if the price is right, which in this case it is. I just checked on Microcenter and it's $10 more for the ASRock Z77 Extreme4, but that's not too big of a difference. I'm just worried about the quality of the motherboard compared to the ASUS Zabertooth Z77. Although $240 for a motherboard is a bit ridiculous, is the $95 for the ASRock Z77 a good enough board?

In response to both of you as far as the HD and SSD go, I've been told that an SSD would only increase my start-up times on applications such as games and not overall performance. Is this true?

False it would decrease start-up time, hence faster loading, But gameplay FPS would depend on your videocard installed not on your storage. Get it.

I think I may have overclocked my CPU in a not-so-textbook way and that may be bringing my performance down a bit. I don't like using guides though, I'd rather just have someone help me individually tune my processor over the phone, Steam, Skype, or some other chat program.

As far as GPUs go, what do you guys recommend? I'm not sure if I'd see a bigger performance increase from upgrading to an i5 3570K or upgrading my GPU and leaving the CPU alone. Even so, which GPU on the market is the best bang for your buck right now? I've heard a lot of people say GTX 670, but I've been eyeing the top XFX 7970 card for a while and can't decide. I don't use any of the PhysX or 3D stuff NVIDIA comes with, so taking that into consideration, which would be best and most reliable?

And will the SSD make THAT much of a difference?

When you refer to everyday applications seeing a noticeable upgrade, is it implied that the SSD would completely replace the HD in which case I'd have to buy an SSD large enough in size to house EVERYTHING I currently have? Or are you referring to a small-sized SSD that would only hold my games pretty much. If you are talking about a smaller SSD, how would putting my games on an SSD improve performance throughout my system overall? I just don't see the relationship between the two if everything isn't on the SSD.

I am talking about a small SSD with enough space for your OS and some of your main programs/games. A 128GB SSD should be more than enough thumb.gif
