Need Advice on Upgrades - Page 2

1st gen i5/i7s are still more than capable for playing modern games, don't bother upgrading your board/chip/RAM now - just wait till the spring for Haswell.

Either get yourself a SSD (for OS + programs) + a 7.2k drive for games etc (that green drive should just be for storage only).
Or if your budget permits you could opt for a larger capacity SSD and call it a day.

If you vid card isn't cutting it anymore, pickup a 2nd or upgrade to newer one (7870/660ti/7950 would do you just fine).

Alright, forgot about the OS. Is the transfer of the OS easy/smooth from a normal HD? I'm sure there's a guide, but have you done it before?

Also, between the two GPUs below, which would everyone recommend in terms of overall best card, best value, most efficient, etc.?

XFX Double D Radeon HD 7970 Black Edition 3GB 384-bit GDDR5

EVGA GeForce GTX 670 FTW Signature2 2GB 256-bit GDDR5

EVGA GeForce GTX 670 Superclocked+ w/ Backplate 4GB 256-bit GDDR5

EVGA GeForce GTX 670 2GB 256-bit GDDR5

Not sure which one to pick. It's is important to note that I don't use any of the NVIDIA 3D, PhysX, or other features. I run my games without anti-aliasing, anisotropic filtering, or anything of the like. I just need something fast and something that is a lot faster than the GTX 560 Ti Classified 448-Core I currently have because it's simply not enough for me.
Well you'd be able to do all those things you don't need with any of those cards (save for PhysX w/ the Raedons of course) tongue.gif
Again I think you could get away with less like a 7950 or 660Ti, but if you want a bit more oopmh to last you longer that's perfectly understandable.

As for the OS, yea you're going to have to install Windows on your new drive if that's what you're going to boot from.
You'll want to backup any data off that green drive you want to keep too, I'd reformat it if it's just for storage.

There's a fantastic guide here for installing + optimizing your Windows install for SSDs too smile.gif

i would say go with the 670 signaure, why? i hate amd vid cards, i have had three of them and friends have had them, the drivers are a pain in the a$$ and when i wanted to upgrade my video cards, even uninstalling and using a driver cleaner could not get it completely off. i had to wipe both of those hdds to use my new gfx card. so i am not a nvidia fan and i prefer evga

Why do you recommend the Signature over the Superclocked? I'm not too knowledgeable as far as GPUs go, but would 4GB be better than 2GB? Also, neither is 384-bit...

the difference between the two depends on your monitor resolution & number, a single monitor having 1080p the 2GB version is fine, but as you increase the resolution, the 4GB will tend to be viable, question is it worth the $100 extra cost it depends, its worth buying if there is a good deal breaker or if its on sale or a model cost equal to 2GB version, but with extra $100 extra charge, no its not. That's why instead of going for the 4GB version, most will buy the HD7970 3GB instead, or will be satisfied with the gtx 680 2gb version.

I'm running a 1920x1080 monitor, but I don't think I need more than 2 or 3GB. Also, I'd be looking at the 670 and the 7970 only. The 660 Ti isn't going to be enough for me and I feel the same way about the 7800 series. For the same price, I have the 670s and the 7900s to work with.

also the signature compared to the superclocked has a dual fan system to cool it which would keep it cooler under higher clocks and the aexta 2gb of ram does do quite a bit for higher resolutions and dual monitors
