You, my friend, are the best! Much thanks for all the help... the 11.32 may just be the one I go with.

I guess I sort of said that out of context, compared to the other recommendations made here I assume (based on nothing really tongue.gif) that the STX's DAC should be at least close to as good, if not as good, as the external ones. I was looking at another thread referenced which determined that once paired with a very high-end amp with the intention of achieving the absolute most out of the HE-500s, at that point the STX DAC would be a slight bottleneck. Again, I have no basis for that justification myself other than just taking their far more experienced word for it wink.gif

But in that regard, I am a bit curious as to what technically constitutes a better DAC than the STX's...

Haha right, because there's a certain point for DACs where achieving a higher SNR has no effect because it's simply inaudible to the human ear? And I thought the STX was beyond that point.

All it takes is cost. It can be measurably worse, but if it costs a lot, people will eat it up.

And would you consider headphones as audiophoolry? HE-500s are a fairly expensive pair. Sure they can't sound twice as good as HE-400s tongue.gif

Maybe not, but maybe if sounding noticeably better is worth more to a particular individual... I was actually considering the HE-6 and the HD800 because I really like neutral sound, but at this point can't justify the price (yet) wink.gif

I was being sarcastic... Obviously improvement in sound and cost isn't a 1:1 ratio.

$700 for HE-500 is a good price as it competes very well with the HE-6. No doubt it's miles ahead of the HE-400 and the previous generation of flagships like the DT880, HD600, and Q701. The current gen on high-end cans don't have the technical weakness the old gen did.

HE-6 does sound better when you have a very nice and powerful amp though. From reading around head-fi, more people preferred the sound signature of the HE-500 though. It just fit the taste of more people. Can't go wrong with either, just needs to fit your budget.

Neither the HE-6's or the HD800s are neutral. That's why they don't totally suck.

700 for HE500s is NOT a good price unless you're buying it brand new. I would never pay 700 for HE500s.

It's easily a 500 dollar headphone. It's not miles ahead of the HE-400. Many people prefer the HE-400s over the HE-500s.

The HE-6 is better than the HE-500. There's no arguing that. Sure, you could like the sound better on the HE-500 or the HE-400, but the HE-6 is better.

HE-500s don't sound 2x better than HE-400s. In fact, they don't sound 1.2x better than HE-400s.

If you can dish out money for HIFIMAN's planar headphones, you can dish out for a proper headphone amp.

I guess I hadn't properly considered looking at a used pair, I may check that out, but I have a feeling I'll end up going new. Do you have any recommendations in the range of the HE-6/HD800 that are more neutral? Most if not all that I've read on them said they're very neutral. And with the HEs, everything I've seen compared the two as the 500s being noticeable better quality yet about the same value as the 400s?

Don't get it twisted. The HE-500 is 700 dollars. The HE-400 is 400 dollars. It's not even close price wise.

The HE-500s drop hundreds when used. The HE-400 drop almost nothing. They're so very hard to find used as well.
