I wonder, if this hurricane happened in a 3rd world country, just how generous people would be.
Don't get me wrong, i'm glad people who have had their lives torn up are getting help (and lots of it) and i hope them the best, but i just wish people would be equally as generous to countries that don't get as much media attention or a big government that can afford to help them out.

To be fair, the U.S. and companies and individuals within it donates many billions of dollars to 3rd world countries each year, it just rarely makes the top news so most people don't know it's occurring. How many people know that the Bill and Melinda Gates foundation is spending many millions of dollars each year in Pakistan trying to help eradicate Polio there? Not many.

Part of the problem in some of the stricken areas is that volunteers cannot safely reach the people that need the help, regardless of how much money we throw at it. In the case of Pakistan, many polio cases are occurring near the Pakistan/Afghanistan border where there are military conflicts and extremist groups like Al-Qaeda, these groups won't even allow the children to be vaccinated because they think that the people giving the vaccines may actually be poisoning the kids, or may be spies. Those kinds of problems happen all over the place, not just in Pakistan, and hinder our ability to help.
