Noctua DH-14 SE2011 Fan and Fan color questions

Thread Starter
So I'm in the final stages of planning and prepping for my "Black Friday" gaming rig and I like the reviews that the DH-14 has been getting but the only thing I don't like is the color of the fans with its white guy flesh tone fan housing and black guy flesh tone for the actual fan.

So has anyone painted these or replaced them with say a good Delta tech fan?

Would replacing the fan severely impact the performance?

How hard would this be to do?

http://noctua.at/main.php?show=productview&products_id=41&lng=en&set=1 For pics and specs.

Any advice would be appreciated.

Changing the fans is not hard at all, considering that they are clipped. However, the color palette is distinctive of the Noctua brand. They receive alot of negativity regarding the color of their fans, but yet, people continue to buy them. As far as fan replacement type, I assume you would want a good pressure fan, as opposed to a volume fan. Noise level is at your discretion.

You could get two Black and white Thermalright TY-147 Fans, they are better than the Noctua Fans anyway.

Can you expand on what you mean by pressure fan vs volume?

I would think for example a fan blowing 250+ cfm would have a large mount of pressure behind it in order to move that much air.

Pressure fans have a steeper pitch in the blade and provide more pressure at a rpm. Volume fans have less pitch but are built to spin faster. The trade off is noise. Pressure is inverse to volume (according to Boyle's Law), but rather than discuss physics, look at the fans ratings. When a fan is placed next to a sink, pressure is more important for flow to overcome the resistance of the fins. When a fan is placed near a chassis opening, volume is more important to circulate the air.

What siggie30 said.

But I believe many fans area also very good case fans. Reason is they often move very similar cfm at similar noise and have the added advantage of not loosing as much cfm because of vent design, filters and whatever else gets in airflow's way. wink.gif

The static pressure is almost completely negligible if we talk about heatsinks with low fin density like the D14 or most other high end air coolers for that matter. And i dont think Boyle-Mariotte has anything to do with this either wink.gif

Defend your statement with data please.

How aboput personal experience with these things? If i want quiet operation the last thing i'd look at is the static pressure.

If you want data why dont you look at some of ehumes tests?
http://www.overclock.net/products/noctua-nf-f12-pwm/reviews/4784

The F12 (~2,6mm H²O) is virtually identical to the P12 (1,68mm H²O) as far as noise/performance on the D14 goes.

http://www.overclock.net/t/1189963/secrets-of-the-d14-chapter-6-high-performance-fans-images-ahead-may-load-slowly

Look at the performance of the Gentle Typhoon AP30 & Ultra Kaze 3000 fan combination, wich produces stupid amount of pressure and airflow for that matter. And now look at the performance of the stock fan configuration of the D14 ( wich is kinda mediocre in every way possible): the difference is only ~5°C
this should tell you everything you need to know really. If an ultra noisy, high pressure, high airflow pair of fans will give you 5°C better temps then you do the math on how much you can possibly increase the performance with fans with a similar noiselevel.
