Will ASUS VG278H and VG 278HE work with 3D Vision Surround 3D?

Not really an overlocking question, but you guys are the smartest computer peeps I know.

Ok I have the ASUS VG278H. Great monitor, works well in 3D. It came with the emitter and glasses. I currently have a regular surround setup with 2 crappy older monitors. Obviously I can't run 3D surround with them. My plan is to upgrade the two side monitors to 27 inch 3D monitors as well. That way I can use them for regular surround as well as 3D surround.

The obvious choice is to buy 2 more ASUS VG278H. Yet they come with emitters and glasses, and I really don't need more of those. They still run about $550.

Or I can get 2 of the ASUS VG278HE. They don't come with an emitter or glasses, and are about $75 cheaper. The only spec difference I can find is the HE goes up to 144HZ, and the H only does 120HZ. I "think" they are the same size, although the specifications make it hard to tell.

I am running dual SLI GTX680 video cards if that matters.

Anybody know about these 2 monitors or even running this setup? I guess I can go safe and spend $200 more and get the exact same monitor, but my wife already wants to neuter me.....

Thanks.

I also have this question. If you find out if it works, please don't forget to post it here.

  • I want to know if the sync polarities of the monitors are the same because if they are different, Nvidia surround won't work. (According to Nvidia Control Panel)
  • Also I want to know if 3D will work with only the VG278H having the emitter. (I assume yes)

If anyone has a similar set up or knowledge on these monitors, please provide information!

My friend has 3 h models and it only utilises one 3D emitter and I know the HE model drops to 120hz during 3D mode so in theory it should work. Nvidia actually state that when setting up 3D surround you should use three identical panels. Im in the same predicament.

Yeah, according to this they all "must be the same make and model for 3D Vision Surround. I wonder if there is code in place to stop use from using different monitors, or if it is just a recommendation.

While only one 3d emitter is used on my VG278h's they do have to be the same model for surround 3d.
If you don't want to hang onto the spare 3d glasses you can sell them on ebay, they get upwards of $100 AUD.
That should negate any price hike the VG278H has over the HE model.

This is what Asus replied to me.

From the research that i have looked through is that there are ALMOST exactly the same, it seems that the HE is full-array LED with the H being edge-lit. but everything thing else is exactly the same except for the memory stick expansion (only available on the H model) I would say that both the HE and the H should work in sync just fine together. in the 3D the refresh rate on the HE is 120 as the H is the same. Hope this helped you.

Next month ill be buying the monitors. So we will see.

So will the software stop you if the monitors are not the same model?

Actually, now that I think about it, I don't think the software will stop you in regards to the monitor. I'm currently running some crappy old 24" in 2D surround with my 27" 3D monitor. To experiment, I tried to put it into 3D mode. The monitors flickered and the drivers tried to make it happen. Then I got an error about not being able to put the application in full screen. I didn't expect it to work.

I replied back to ASUS asking about the sync polarity on the monitors. If they say they are the same, I will try it. What sucks, is I'm forced to buy them online, nobody has them locally. So if they don't work I'm stuck. Hopefully somebody else out there has this setup and can let me know before the first.

This was posted by a member of the Nvidia forums. Making me think ill just go with the exact set
Danger, danger will robison family!

While Tepescovir is trying to give you solid advice, he/she has mistakenly presumed that nvidia surround has the same requirements as nvidia 3D surround.

It does NOT.

Having matching resolution, refresh rate, and sync polarity is NOT SUFFICIENT to get 3D surround to work. 3D surround requires precisely identical monitors. In fact, people have reported that some monitors under went a firmware upgrade during their production lines without any change in model number and the old firmware monitors were incompatible with the new firmware monitors for 3D vision surround.

This is because 3D vision surround requires that all 3 monitors are displaying left and right images at precisely the same time.

If you wish to enjoy 3D vision surround - it's amazing, absolutely amazing - you must buy precisely the same monitor you currently own. You cannot buy a similar model without the emitter. It will not work, and even if you could modify files to trick the drivers to thinking they work, all it takes is the monitors being a millisecond off in their left/right eye image display timings for your entire experience to be ruined.

I can safely say that monitors with built in transmitters work perfectly fine in 3D sourround. I own 3 of the 27" acer monitors with built in transmitters and enjoy amazing 3D surround performance.

The drivers will block it if you're running different monitors.
It even confirms it on the nVidia site. So just get the VG278H's and you'll have a great setup.
Enjoy.
