Budget gaming/school build for a friend? - Page 3

I just need to say that when I first read through this thread, I thought you said "minesweeper". The thought of a $800 budget to run that made me laugh quite a bit smile.gif.

Although to be honest, minecraft isn't particularly challenging to run from what I hear (I don't actually play it myself). I hear integrated graphics work just fine for it most of the time.

I'd say if he wants to play it on the cheap, this is a GREAT place to recommend a trinity build. Having everything built in together will make it easier for your friend to assemble, and should be more than enough for what he is looking for. Plus that will knock the price of the build down quite a bit, seeing how the top end trinity APU is only $130, and that is both the CPU, and the GPU in one chip.

Note with this build, you will still need to buy a monitor. Since black friday is comming up, you can probably find a decent monitor for under $100
http://www.cyberpowerpc.com/saved/1EKQCH
I will make you another one from newegg, but I dont know if you can build it yourself, so we will see... (I will just edit this post, so refresh it after a little bit)
*Edit*
Just found this on newegg http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16883227436
*Edit*
Ok so if your feeling ambitious or know someone who can build this for you here is a do it yourself that will be fast as hell
Case: Thermaltake V3 $44.99
Processor:i5-3570k (completely overkill and overclockable for when he gets into it, which he will eventually) $219.99
Motherboard: ASRock Z75 Pro3 It has lots of USB3 ports and 2 PCI ports for video cards. $79.99
Ram: Corsair Vengeance 8GB (2x4GB) $47.99
Power Supply: Silverstone ST50F-ES 500W Power Supply Has 80+ certification which is important! $54.99
Hard Drive: Western Digital Blue 500GB $69.99
Video Card: Sapphire Radeon HD 7770 GHz $119.99
Keyboard and Mouse: Generic Logitech Keyboard/Mouse combo $17.99
Speakers: Generic Logitech Satalite Speakers $12.99
Total: about $750 with windows 7
Also note that with the Video Card you get Far Cry 3 and NEXUiZ for FREE!!
*Edit* Woops forgot windows, teehee http://www.tsonlinesoftware.com/Microsoft-Windows-7-Professional--64-BIT--License-And-Media--1-PC-_p_171.html

I can't approve the useless and horrible imbalance of a $200+ i5 CPU into a $750 budget, with quality sacrifices everywhere. An FX-6300 paired with a 7870 or better card would wipe the floor with your config. In most cases, I consider a minimum $1000 budget to constitute the worth of a $200+ i5 processor with balance in mind. If the higher-end GPU is not necessary (as with this case), then the higher-end CPU is probably not either. Forget about the i5, save money, move the balance and get this guy an SSD. An SSD will make far more of an all around difference than the ability to claim you have an i5.

And the Cyberpower PC is not impressive. It could be far better.

Re the second suggestion: that "high latency RAM" is a 30nm IC kit that will wipe the floor with the Corsair and G.Skill stuff in performance with overclocking. I could concur with an FM2 APU build at this budget, actually, for the performance and power efficiency - but it should at least have the 6670 included in the price (adjust the balance?).

To whoever was saying that IGPs are incapable, the APU is different as it has redefined the iGP by providing the world's most powerful iGP two generations in a row. The A10-5700 and 5800k could match the power of a desktop 6670 or the previous GeForce 9800GTX.

I agree, I didnt try very hard on that one simply because I didnt know if OP could build it by himself

Im not saying an SDD is pointless, I know that if you have a fast system they make all the difference, im just saying that for OP's usage, it wont be as helpful as a GPU.

The only games played are web brower games and minecraft, if he wants to play minecraft with friends, he might be hosting the minecraft server from his machine, a SSD will help with block loading.

This, Lets keep in mind the OP wants to save as much money as possible. ADHDadditiv you can't assume OPs friend will play more games in the future. Wasting money.

Sorry, but thats an invalid arguement, the new minecraft patch made it easier then ever to make a server and the chunk loading only uses the internals of the players computer, and the hosts computer only has to note down chunk numbers, not the actual chunks.

I do however like that build you made there, although he probably doesn't need that nice of a case, he could always get a slightly cheaper case and get himself a nice keyboard, mouse and some speakers with the money he will save.

*EDIT*

I can assume that, its a very very safe assumption because I didnt think I would play more PC games until I actually got my hands on my laptop. Now Im $1000 into a gaming rig and plan on spending another $1000

Well, The server really only lags when the initial chunk is loaded, but a player will notice "lag" on updates, say a player destroys a block and it is not removed right away, that lag is noticed even from a SSD (not all the time though, but it is even worse from a HDD).

I have hosted several servers (after I got around antivirus problems) and it has more to do with internet speed then actual computer speed.
In other words, slow computer/fast internet = decent server fast computer/slow internet = crap server
Also my friend has a really really crappy computer, but his internet is the fastest so we started using him to host the server

Random, since I love the A10 5700's price-performance and power efficiency:

AMD A10-5700 - $125 shipped [NCIX]

ASRock FM2A75-Pro4M - $68 shipped [Newegg]

MagicRAM - $39 shipped [Newegg]
Antec Neo ECO 450C - $25 shipped [NCIX]

Antec One - $42 shipped [NCIX]

DVD-RW drive - $17 shipped [NCIX]

Vertex 4 256GB SSD - $190 shipped [NCIX]

Windows 8 Pro - $120 shipped [NCIX]

$626 shipped or so, leaving plenty of room for peripherals and speakers and whatever else you want.
I suggest Windows 8 optimized peripherals like any of the logitech touch mice that were recently outed.

Your friend will like the megamassive SSD, power efficiency, and Windows 8 optimization.

Ehh not really, Even on a LAN you will experience the block lag. It is a lot of IO performance, you can dimish it from running the server from a RAM disk. Which is what I do with my Bukkit servers.
