Budget gaming/school build for a friend? - Page 5

-Will the Hyper 212+ work with the A10-5700?
-My friend wants a pre-overclocked RAM kit, as he doesn't want to bother with overclocking it himself. Any recommendations?
-Will a 450W PSU be enough? My friend is fine with only using integrated graphics for now (since it can run Minecraft) but he wants to be able to expand in the future.

I'm unsure on the cooler, but I can answer the other 2.

RAM 2133mhz 8gb g-skill - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820231519 - 35$ after promo code 2BLKNVMW7 *ends the 12th*

a 450w should be fine, since video cards will only be getting more power efficient as time goes by, but currently a 450w is good for any single card(of this generation atleast?)

Point of consideration:

What happens with the IO intensive mine-craft server is competing for memory bandwidth with the APU's GPU? Stutter much maybe?

What happens to the friendship when hundreds of dollars are spent and the machine can't run a high detail texture pack smoothly?

FYI: high detail textures are bandwidth intensive, something the APU lacks big time. Even at 1866 speeds, the APU's IMC is only offering up HALF of the bandwidth that a DDR3 based discrete GPU manages. This notion that 1866 speeds will somehow alleviate the bottleneck is atrociously wrong. The A6-5400K is bottle-necking primarily on memory bandwidth with only 192 shaders, the 384 shaders on the A10 chips show piss poor scaling above the A6, indicative of the crap memory performance. A 512 bit texture pack will bring even middle tier discrete GPUs down to ~30-45FPS. (Those are cards with 5-10X the memory bandwidth of the APU.

If you follow these blind AMD fan-boys you're going to have a mess to clean up in your relationship.

The budget would have to be a LOT tighter before I would even consider an APU rig a valid option for a machine that is primarily tasked with gaming performance.

Eric

Here's a alternative, but it's more expensive, but it should quell any "fears" about performance. You can pick a cheaper motherboard if you wish. *edit* the builds between both me and mdocod are pretty similar, so just pick and choose the best parts/performance ratio.

CASE - Rosewill CHALLENGER Black Gaming ATX Mid Tower Computer Case 40$ Free S&H.

HDD - Seagate Barracuda Green ST1500DL003 1.5TB 65$

Video Card - SAPPHIRE Radeon HD 7750 1GB 128-bit GDDR5 99$, 89$ after MiR. Free two worlds II

PSU - Rosewill CAPSTONE Series CAPSTONE-450-M 80 PLUS GOLD Certified Modular Power Supply 60$

RAM - G.SKILL Sniper Series 8GB (2 x 4GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 2133 35$ with promo code 2BLKNVMW7

MB - ASRock Z75 Pro3 LGA 1155 Intel Z75 HDMI SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 ATX Intel Motherboard 72$ with promo code MBPROMO1108

CPU - Intel Core i3-2100 Sandy Bridge 3.1GHz LGA 1155 65W Dual-Core Desktop Processor 105$ with promo code EMCJJNA38

OS - Microsoft Windows 8 Professional 64-bit 140$, I suggest using xd_1771's method.

SSD- Mushkin Enhanced Chronos 2.5" 120GB SATA III 80$

Total price - 706$.

*EDIT* forgot optical.

PSU+Optical combo - http://www.newegg.com/Product/ComboDealDetails.aspx?ItemList=Combo.1095195

Total price - 716$

^^^

I can't imagine that the loss of choosing the APU setup is as horrible as you speak of when it is the subject of "web browser games and Minecraft" that comes into mind. I don't know what the OP's friend demands exactly in terms of intensity in Minecraft; however, you are taking a pretty big step forward there to be taking us on with claims of "fan-boy" and "blind". I have a few friends that manage Minecraft gaming on laptops with Intel's HD 3000 or 4000 graphics, and desktops with APUs.

@Iamazn, I should warn you: Going with a discrete-card based setup is a huge sacrifice in power efficiency when school purposes that should take priority over gaming should mean that those components are NOT being used most of the time anyway. Of all comparable platforms at this price tier, the A10-5700 flat out beats the rest in idle power consumption. What would having to deal with a discrete card's idle power consumption (on top of Socket 1155/Ivy's already higher idle power consumption on its own) mean for a student that may need to pay his or her own power bills each month?

If a discrete card should be considered absolutely necessary (and again I do not know to what exact degree but this is just a suggestion), the large budget allows for a plethora of alternate solutions while maintaining socket FM2 that none of you are even thinking of. Higher-end FM2 motherboards come with a feature called Lucid Virtu MVP that brings switchable graphics technology and a balance between power efficiency and performance to the desktop. Pair a GA-F2A85X-UP4 with your 5700 and you can maintain one of the most power efficient processors on the market, superior balance in all-around performance and power efficiency and gaming oomph as needed with any discrete card.

I also highly suggest that between the two OS choices and optimizations, you encourage the OP to take advantage of the superior productivity provided in Windows 8 by:

  1. Getting Windows 8
  2. Getting peripherals optimized for Windows 8, such as a touch mouse.

Using the extra budget you have available to spend, as I anticipate the PC with performance that will fit your needs will fall well within this.

I don't think my friend will be using any extremely high res texture packs because he is new to Minecraft (he just got the game a few days ago). I think I'll go with the A10-5700.
