Webdesigner AWOL, questions on taking over the site.

So my mother has a business and she paid a guy $1000 to design her webpage about a year ago and she never was really happy with it. Well the dude is AWOL now and she needs her site updated and maintained and has tasked me to do the job. I have some experience with designing sites but am very much so still an amateur. I do have access to her site through Blue Host and I am able to ftp into it and upload files. yesterday I created another domain to host my tf2 server files on for fast download and that went smooth but I do not know how to "take over" her site. The original designer used Word Press which I am not familiar with and I do not have the username and password for that. It seems that would be necessary to be able to edit the web page. One option (although its last resort) is to start from scratch using another program, currently I have Xara Pro. Like I said I am not a Pro web designer and would be much easier to edit what is already in place on the interwebs than to start all over. Any help on my options would be greatly appreciated guys!

If she's not happy with the site to begin with, it would probably be worth it to just start over. Wordpress is really easy to learn. You just have to find a framework that you like, and customize it to fit your needs. So you're not really "starting from scratch" so to speak.

Thats a good way to look at it for sure. The basic layout of the site is not what she doesnt like its how basic it is. He didnt add a products page like she asked and that is the main thing I need to do. I guess that I can just dive in and see what my little brain comes up with. smile.gif

If you have access to the database you can change the site's admin log in data.

Whoa I do have access to blue host I didn't realize the login data for the web design software mentioned was stored on there. Looks like I need to sift through some folders on it.

No, you'd need to get access to the database, not the filesystem. Assuming that the host uses cPanel or Plesk to expose hosting configuration options to users (most do), there should be a link on the home page that will take you to phpMyAdmin, which is a tool that will let you edit the database directly.

However, I'd follow the instructions on the page linked in the above post under the "Through FTP" section instead. Let WordPress handle the password reset for you instead of mucking around with DB records yourself. Things are much less likely to go wrong smile.gif

Sort of off topic, but is it just me or does the 'I paid this guy to do my website and now he is missing' scenario come up quite frequently. I'm not a web developer but I feel like I always see headlines like that on craigslist n such.

People don't do proper requirements, always leads to trouble.

Clients change their mind, requirements are dropped, stuff gets added later on, the list goes on...

Never tackle it on your own, as a programmer you need a buffer (project manager or something)

You never want to deal directly with the client, trust me.

Follow these instructions, there's a lot of ways to reset the password. Assuming you don't have access to the Control Panel or MySQL, you should try the FTP method.
