When did this happen? I thought that they were fully behind C++ for W8 and WP8 (but prefering C#, of course).

Well you can do D2D and D3D apps, and a few libs/dlls/runtime components but you can't make the non-DX apps without C#.

Well, at least in VS Express.

Also just rechecked W8 VS Express, and there's actually more templates there for C++. I got mixed up there redface.gif

MS originally crippled VS Express but then later reversed their decision after the backlash they received:

Yes they did, but there is still no C++ WinForms, which bothers me.

They probably is in the paid-for versions of VS. But at the end of the day, if you want a free development environment then you're probably better off on Linux.

Matter of opinion brother.

I'm a lot more familiar with languages that ignore white-space and use parentheses and semicolons, and a few other things about it threw me.
Mind you I like Python so it's somewhat an oxymoron (given that Python and Ruby share a similarish syntax)

I'm not saying it's a bad language, there are parts of it I do like and you can get stuff done quick with it. And I do want to learn Rails at some point...

Sure you can. Mingw and Cygwin are both suitable for cross-compiling and targeting Windows from a Linux host.
