Depending upon who you ask, you'll find either driver is better. Thus ^. Personally, I've had Nvidia and AMD cards, and had to make both work under Linux. Both have strong points, both have weak points. I have yet to find either is significantly better then the other. And they both continually improve over time, so in general they get better.

I personally recommend AMD over Nvidia due to AMD's open source contributions on the desktop graphics. So I'd recommend going AMD as the out of the box experience should improve faster (and it supports open source!). Either will work though.

AMD can be hit and miss but generally if you have a semi-recent but not bleeding edge card, and a fairly normal setup then you're fine. AMDs Linux drivers used to be horrible but now it's just mainly the crappy updating and legacy drivers. (I was stuck on an old version of xorg on my laptop for ages because of that)
