Should a friend of mine switch from a Pentium G630 to an AMD setup? - Page 2

His board should easily support ivy. Have him grab an I3 3225 and the gpu he wants. He will be disappointed going to amd.

Yeah, there's always Christmas. We're trying to see if there's a point to doing a hardware switcheroo for under $100 for right now. Seems no, because as you also suggest, Ivy Bridge is the way to go. In some sense, I'm bummed we can't spend money on stuff, but also I see it's better to be reasonable. Oh well.

ivy bridge pentium would be great and cheap.
add a cheap H61 mobo, some cheap ram, a decent psu and a 5830 from his friend and he has a good mid level build for gaming biggrin.gif
post #14 of 28
Tell him to save like $300-$350 so he can upgrade to a i3-2100 and a 7850 2GB, he'll be more than happy with the performance improvement.

I have to think he would be smarter sticking with Intel and upgrading to a better cpu/psu/videocard in the future.

But if you are serious about the FM2 switch, check the memory he's using. Something like DDR3-1066 or DDR3-1333 will significantly gimp AMD's APU performance.

Some benchmarks: http://hexus.net/tech/reviews/cpu/46073-amd-a10-5800k-trinity-needs-faster-ram/?page=3

You should probably figure the cost of DDR3-1866 (or better) ram into your upgrade.

I'm not sure about how much I've not explained, and it's likely I haven't explained anything, but overall the grasp of who has which hardware - and who is who in the first place - is slightly muddled. I apologize. Objectively, this is good input. Thanks.

This makes sense. Is it that much, though? A 21XX and a used 7850 should be about $200. Well, all the more to upgrade or the less to save either way.

This is an awesome point as actually he has 4GB of DDR3-1333. It's not exactly a problem since I have 8GB of DDR3-1600 for him to use as an upgrade, but with an H61 chipset apparently limiting the speed to 1066 with that G630, we don't need to worry too much about memory right now. Thanks, though! That's awesome insight.

Get a used 7950 if you can find it for $200 + the i3 should max out anything out at the moment at 50+ fps and besides it'll be something he can build around as he goes, so when he's got the money he can get a decent Z77 board (Asrock Z77 Extreme 4 gives you plenty of oomph for your money) and a 3570K and he should be set for 2 years or so.

lol look how we have gone from a 9800 gt to 7750 to 5830 to 7850 and now 7950 biggrin.gif
am sure he does not need 7950. at best a 7850. 1080p gaming requires nothing more than a 7850.
in fact 5830 is more than sufficient for 1080p

HD 7660D is roughly equivalent to an HD6670 DDR3 graphics card. Yes you can Dual Hybrid Crossfire with an HD 6670 or HD 6570. Only. My understanding is memory speed and scaling matter,
Roughly Ivy Bridge and a GPU scale up more than Trinity, especially the Dual Crossfire.
The only kick is Trinity does DirectX11 while HD 5830 is DirectX10.

What do you think would be fun for you? Entertainment does not have to be strictly reasonable,
The HD5830 supports DX11:
http://www.gpureview.com/Radeon-HD-5830-card-626.html

AMD was actually first to market with DX11 GPUs in their HD5000 series:

Upgrading from a Sandy Bridge Pentium G630 2.7GHz to an Ivy Bridge Pentium G2120 3.1GHz seems too minor to be worth the time. That would be like buying a new car and then the next year upgrading to the same model updated for that year. I would say at least an i3 2100 if at the right price and more ideally an LGA1155 quad. But the GPU upgrade is the priority as the G630 is only a dual but it's still pretty new and decently fast.

An i3-2100 will be more than enough power for him unless he plans to crossfire or sli in the future. At that point hes going to be switching chipsets anyways. A nib i3 can be had on ebay right now for 100 and a used 6950 that he can overclock if he needs will run him around 130-150. More than enough for 1080p gaming and only 250ish when said and done.
