Should a friend of mine switch from a Pentium G630 to an AMD setup? - Page 3

He could probably pick up an HD6870 for dirt cheap off ebay.

Seems like he should just save up and sit tight with his current gaming setup. I'm all right with this.

am sure he does not need 7950. at best a 7850. 1080p gaming requires nothing more than a 7850.
in fact 5830 is more than sufficient for 1080p
I like this idea. A 5830, however power hungry, will let this friend's computer keep up with whichever demanding game he doesn't have yet, and it's the cheapest upgrade at the moment - all things considered.

Awesome point. If it's a concern at all, I wasn't going to let him upgrade to an i3 21XX unless he could sell his current CPU to someone else. That's tough since there's no one in the market for the second-slowest 1155 CPU at the moment. Thanks for pointing this out.

A nib i3 can be had on ebay right now for 100 and a used 6950 that he can overclock if he needs will run him around 130-150. More than enough for 1080p gaming and only 250ish when said and done.
Now if we can cut that spending by 2.5x, we should be good to go. He has $100, maybe, and gift-buying holidays might empty him out. Waiting to save up $250 for a PC part purchase would take so long that he'd end up buying a used HD 8950 16GB model and an i9 9950K.

I just checked, and realistic prices are $130-140. That's about $30-40 more than his current budget. Fingers are crossed, though. What's the performance difference between a 6870 and a 5830? I think it's about the same, and we can buy another friend's 5830 for $50.

Again, it wouldn't be my pick but $50 for an HD5830 is a pretty good deal. Now price aside, the HD6870 is quite a bit faster by about 33% on average: Source. The HD6870 is actually slightly faster than the HD5850.

keep the G630 and tell him to buy that Radeon 5830.
The onboard 7660 of trinity apu will be no match for the 5830

the pentium g630 is a dualcore but its no slouch, its kinda like an i3 without hyperthreading.

Thanks for the link! Now if only there were a triple SLI GTX 470 test result...

If there were no $50 5830, this would make sense. Right now, he'd be paying $25 more for more power consumption and less performance. It would fold better, though. I had a GTX 280, and it was a pretty awesome card.

That's what I've figured. This thread was started to make sure of what I thought, but I left it very open. It's too bad I didn't learn anything to change my mind, in a way, but I'm glad that this makes sense.

He is better off sticking with his system and upgrading the GPU and then later upgrading to a faster LGA11155 CPU (depending on PSU and if it's an OEM PC or not). The HD5830 wouldn't be my pick unless it was insanely cheap. The HD5830 was severely crippled compared to the HD5850 while consuming more power, and was not that much faster than the HD5770. Older cards like that are also not as efficient as newer cards. I would get something more along the lines of an HD7850 1GB, HD6850, GTX460, or HD7770 depending on budget and desired performance.

The 7850 will single-handedly bring him up to modern gaming standards. They generally also all seem to overclock to at least 1050-1100MHz, both from personal experience, and anecdotally on the web. If he's really strapped for cash, he can get a 1GB version of it (Gigabyte Windforce) for ~$170, but I would highly recommend the 2GB Gigabyte version if at all possible for ~$195, as it's clocked at 975MHz out of the box and has a good, quiet cooler. I wouldn't go below the 7850, unless he's practically destitute. If so, the Asus 7770 1GB can be had for $89.99 with a $10 mail-in rebate (through NCIX in Canada):

http://www.ncix.com/products/?sku=73018&vpn=HD7770-DC-1GD5-V2&manufacture=ASUS&promoid=1146

but he would have to pounce on it immediately as it's only good for today. You cannot beat that deal, as it's $50 off normal price.

He has $100 budget and other distractions. The 5830 is a very good card. And usually sells for more than $50.
Available spendable income can be a slippery concept for many people.
