WIN 8 Upgrades are crushing my co's Internet Bandwidth

Thread Starter
Talk about a bandwidth hungry process. Looking at MRTG reports since we started selling Win 8 , our Store demo machines and Customer upgrades from win7, and XP to WIN8 are destroying bandwidth IE maxxed out in the Ingress direction from the Internet. wow we are screwed for holiday season unless we do something.

Surprise...Thanks MS

Update server? We download the updates to one machine one time then push them out over our network which is entirely 10/100. Works fine. Gobs up bandwidth for maybe 5 minutes to download the updates and then it's all handled locally.

Sorry I didn't elaborate. These are Store machines to be sold to customers. We have both Demo machines & we offer upgrade services to those bringing in PC's Laptops etc. Both cases use the Stores Circuit to our Datacenter and rides the main pipe(s) to the Internet.

Multiply this by 2200 Stores and you see the problem with each store having 5 to 15 WIN 8 upgrades or just being connected to the network at the same time. Datacenter Internet Circuit is crushed in the download direction as well as individual Store circuits to the Datacenter. wow we never saw it this bad before for WIn7

[edit] Of course Our corporate office we use the same model you described for desktops at our offices, we push the updates from Internal centralized Server(s). and we are still on XP of course so we can get some work done.

yessir.gif to push updates, it doesn't even have to be very powerful. A $399 Dell Inspiron with an RJ45 connection would do it just fine.

We found it was WIN8 Online Upgrades for customer laptops / PC's were there was no DVD used.

http://windowsupgradeoffer.com/en-US/Home/Faq

Size of the WIN8 Online upgrades are approximately 2Gig. This is all before Patching. Marketing sold these and set it up assuming the Internet was Unlimited as usual. Like I said multiplied by 2000 Stores...fun problems...

So wait.. Are you blaming Microsoft here for selling online upgrades or the marketing department for screwing up? It certainly seems like what MS is doing is perfectly fine to me.

Yeah a WSUS server would sort out your problem.

http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/windowsserver/bb332157.aspx

In fact I'm rather surprised you haven't got one running already if you offer an upgrade service. Could save you a lot of money on your internet bill. Having said that I don't know how you company works but it might be worth bringing up at the next meeting if it hasn't been discussed already.
