[BBC] Microsoft ditches Windows Live Messenger for Skype

Microsoft has announced it intends to "retire" its instant message chat tool and replace it with Skype's messaging tool.

The news comes 18 months after the software giant announced it was paying $8.5bn (£5.3bn) for the communications software developer. Microsoft said Windows Live Messenger (WLM) would be turned off by March 2013 worldwide, with the exception of China. It reflects the firm's determination to focus its efforts on Skype.

WLM launched in 1999 when it was known as MSN Messenger. Over time, photo delivery, video calls and games were added to the package's text-based messages. In 2009, the firm said it had 330 million active users.
Quote:
But the report suggested WLM's US audience had fallen to 8.3 million unique users, representing a 48% drop year-on-year. By contrast, the number of people using Skype to instant message each other grew over the period.

YES. I can finally ditch that and use Skype instead. I've been waiting for something to replace it. Hopefully Microsoft will create an OS X 'Messages' type of thing for Skype.

Man WLM was the bomb back then, it was amazing.
I recently tried to install WLM again like 2 years ago, when I did they had nothing but bloatware and ads EVERYWHERE. Anyways, after I installed (had to uncheck to install the other windows crap, Windows Movie Maker/Mail/and some other stupid things) logged in, and wth did I just open, this isn't the WLM I was used to, they had bunch of useless things on the UI and took me awhile to figure out how to get to my contacts/friends list. I uninstalled right after, WLM is a joke now.

Things were simpler back then, it was a simple installer, click and done. Open up WLM, enter email+pass and log in, right when you logged in you just had a friends/contact list. It was the perfect IM client.

this,

i loved msn because it was simple, it worked well, i liked the way it looked and actually it was and generally still is more slimline in ways than skype

but video messaging never caught up, audio didnt catch up.

But skype doesnt have my fav thing and thats easy to use games to play between you, no setups or anything just grab minesweeper and play a quick casual quick game of something.

i do like skypes lack of a character limit on a post though, it makes talking about and sharing things like code etc better.

buuuuuut skype file transer reallllly sucks, msn oddly is pretty much the best im method of transferring files, it still is and its still why i have it. i hope skype gets and investment from this and improves
