Is it possible to have another person buy Windows 8 Pro update for me?

Hi

I decided that I need to refresh my OS rather than get a new computer, I am currently running Vista on a Q9550 CPU & P35 platform, which satisfies my hardware needs (well, I'm thinking of getting a cheap SSD some time in the future).

The Vista was bought in the US, but I live outside the US and not in one of the 140 countries that Microsoft thinks are worthy of the cheap $40 upgrade download.

So, my question is this: is it possible for my friend in the US to buy the upgrade for me and then just to send me the activation code and the installation disk ISO image? Should he be logged on as me in Microsoft network or not? Does it matter if he has a different OS while running the upgrade assitant?

I also saw that Microcenter stocks $38.88 upgrade DVDs - are these the same stuff? Will the scenario above work with these (sending ISO and code over the internet)? Microcenter is a bit out of his way, so I prefer a solution where he can do it from within the comfort of his own home.

Thanks
Vit

I don't see why it would be a problem to transfer a legit un used copy to you. Go for it.

There's no need to use the Assistant to download after purchase. Upon purchase, you get a cdkey already. After that, you can exit the utility.

Here's the link for Upgrading to Windows 8 via Product Key. http://windows.microsoft.com/en-GB/windows-8/upgrade-product-key-only
It has a win8 setup download.

it's a stripped down win8 upgrade assistant that asks your win8 cdkey and downloads the appropriate setup files. If you have 64 bit windows, it will download 64bit win8 only. Same for 32 bit. Only OEM dvds or i think Upgrade DVDs sold in stores have both versions.

Thanks. So this link will allow downloading the same ISO image as the original assistant?

(Microsoft doesn't make it clear if such option is available, and the button says Install, so I must be sure, as I need to have a backup installation media).

My friend bought the upgrade, but when I run the installer, it also says that Windows 8 is not available in my country and doesn't let me download. My friend has 32bit WinXP and thus not suitable for my 64 bit Upgrade path.

What can I do now? All I need is 64 bit upgrade ISO to burn to a DVD
