Is my RE4 DoA?

Thread Starter
So I just bought a brand new RE4 1TB drive for £60 delivered. It came packaged in bubble wrap and an anti static bad, and looked like it could survive a few small knocks or bumps. I carefully placed it into my rig.

Here's where the problems start. The drive makes a weird noise when W7 is booting, but stops when the password screen appears.
Then, when I try to copy large files (700MB+) over to it, it just fails. I get an error message from Windows, the HDD dissapears from Windows, it makes a screeching noise, and it even makes Google Chrome not work whilst it's trying to copy the files.

Any ideas?

You could try HDDScan and see what it says, but it doesn't sound promising.

Run an extended SMART test on the drive with the manufacturer tools.

http://support.wdc.com/product/download.asp?groupid=612&sid=3

You may need the bootable version if it's your OS drive. I think it might require your BIOS be in IDE mode too? But since you said it "disappears from Windows" rather than mentioning a BSOD, I suppose it's hooked up as a secondary/storage drive? Should be no problem running an extended SMART test, and then you'll find out whether the drive is DOA.

Extended SMART Test results:

Should I RMA the drive? It kept making horrible noises when the test was running.

Yeah it's a backup drive, got an M4 128GB as a boot drive. My BIOS is in ACHI since I've been running off just the M4 for almost a year now, but the test started fine.

My RE4's are as quit as a mouse,
That's really cheap for a 1TB RE4.

It's got bad sectors - RMA it. Possibly shipping damage, possibly a QA slip. Regardless of the cause, you got a dud.
