What WOULD happen if you could just solder in a new RAM chip?

Thread Starter
I know every once in a while people ask if they can upgrade the RAM on their mobile devices and things like that. Let's just say for example Samsung makes a 2GB and 4GB chip with exactly the same pin pattern, what would happen if you somehow soldered that into a tablet with the 2GB RAM chip. Would the tablet just pretty much turn into a brick or could it somehow use it?

If you figure out a way not to fry all of the components around the RAM and system internal memory, then you could do it. Otherwise I'd stick with either Rooting the phone or just saving up your money and buying a year old phone with a service plan.

It wouldn't work, and It would ruin the device it is soldered to, Most people at home lack the equipment to solder components such as memory on PCB. Too much work.
If your device even powered on, It would not detect the memory chip without any traces.

LOL If you add more RAM to the the Phone you need a solder and you need something like, http://www.chipquik.com/, to remove the chips. When you do solder you might overly heat the surrounding chips and, /or, damage the RAM you want to replace.

I solder on HT equipment all the time. If you not an idiot with the soldering iron, theres no reason you couldn't solder the new chip on. Whether or not it will work, I have no idea but I've done lots of stuff that small and with the right tools, it's not that bad.
If hardware can be swapped without damage (which is doubtful) then what you have left is software. Will the software recognize the extra memory. We have all installed full lenght memory sticks that were not recognized for some reason.

I modded my old Palm (a Sony Clie) to expand the internal storage from 16 to 64 MB using a spare Memory Stick (the ol', blue ones) desoldering kit and a bit of time. After that, and another 64 MB MStick, i had 128 MB on it. It felt so spacious...

It would be way harder to do it now IMHO, considering the flux is now at the bottom of the chip instead of at the sides. It could be done with a heat gun but you would have to be very precise where you place the chip...

I'm actually starting to think it wouldn't be an issue. The stock ROMs on android phones/tablets might get a little screwy, but you can install ubuntu and some other linux builds on a lot of phones and tablets. I wouldn't see why it wouldn't just detect the 4GB chip if you could somehow install it. But what I don't know is if the CPU or some other component would mess up because it's expecting x and not 2x.
