I don't think the question is whether on not one has the skills or tools to do it, but if you did successfully accomplish it, without physical damage what would be the result?

This used to be quite popular when Windows Mobile was king. The HTC Universal (for example) had 2x 32MB RAM chips from the factory, but they could be replaced with 2x 64MB chips for 128MB of RAM. It required a BGA (ball-grid-array) soldering machine though (and a ROM with 128MB support), which meant the upgrade was a complete pain in the arse, but it meant the Universal could run WinMo 6.5.3/6.5.5 and still have enough free RAM to run applications. As for modern phones/tablets, it may be possible, but the RAM would have to be the exact same size, shape and have the same pinout. If it was an Android device, it should pick up the extra RAM as well.

Anyway, aren't ARM chips still 32 bit which means they won't support more than 3,4GB of RAM?

This is true, although Samsung has just licenced Cortex-A53 and Cortex-A57 (ARM's first 64-bit CPUs), and Dell are collaborating with Microsoft about 64-bit ARM servers.

This is what I was thinking as well. On top of that, you will need to find chips that will run on the supplied power too. I would think that it would be as much a compatibility issue as far as locating the correct chip as it would be a PITA making the mod.

I would love to give it a shot though. Unfortunately, I am not well off enough to be able to afford screwing up something like this....
