[Engadget]Apple: 3 million iPads sold in three days

So, what did you do over the weekend? If you're Apple, your answer likely involves a lot of bragging about the three million iPads you managed to move. That number, it's worth pointing out, includes both new models: the revamped fourth generation and the newly smallerized iPad mini. That may go a ways toward explaining how the company doubled the 1.5 million mark for its WiFi-only third generation iPad during that device's first weekend, by Apple's own count. According to company head Tim Cook, Apple "practically sold out of iPad minis" and is "working hard to build more quickly." Apple's got more nice words for itself in the press release after the break.

I'd really like to hear this from a 3rd party source instead of Apple themselves. Apple has a habit of skewing sales results. "practically sold out" could mean anything.

How many iPads were they selling per day previously and how much of that 3 million was the new iPads and how many were the old that they are still selling?

Would help to clarify the lack of "Apple ques" on release of their newer products.

Kind of strange that they'd lump them all into one.

Edit: "Queues", although there were probably stores full of Apple reps saying "Que?" on launch day of the iPad mini tongue.gif

And that is probably 3 million I won't see on the streets. I'm so confused that, apparently, there are so many of these things sold, and I either don't see them, or I'm told by the people that own them that they don't have much use for it and leave it around the house.

Couldn't be more true. Tablets are a fad. They'll die out soon enough. They lack the portability of a phone, and the usability of a PC. In the end people will get sick of their shiny new toy and realize it's just a giant waste of money.

I don't think so. Tablets represent the holy grail of mobile computing: A light, portable device that is the size of a screen with the capabilities of a multi-function computer. They are low-power and do not require active cooling to operate normally. In almost every futuristic movie made in the last 15 years or so, we've seen people walking around with portable screens, and that's what a tablet is.

If anything, Tablets may eventually replace consumer desktops and laptops.

This couldn't be any further from the truth for me. I use my iPad for hours throughout the day. It is a quick way to check emails and browse the web no matter where I am. I have so many novels on there as well that I can read while relaxing in bed or on the sofa. When I am waiting at the doctors or at the restaurant, I can also use it for entertainment as well. It is a great laptop replacement for those who use their tablets for general productivity and entertainment purposes. Don't laugh it off simply because you cannot find a sustainable use for it.
