This is LONG into the future if that as the current technology of mobile devices do not match up to that of desktops or laptops. There are a ton of add ons needed for most tablets to provide equal physical functionality of a laptop nor do they potentially have the power to overthrow desktop CPU's and the like.

I like my tablet because I use it as a portable gaming platform instead of buying into the new Nintendo when one is released, and also for reading books since I buy only ebooks now instead of hard copies. I only take it with me when I go somewhere if I am taking a plane or a very long car ride though. It never leaves the house on a normal basis

I can see that happening. Have some kind of Dock and have a proper keyboard and mouse and larger display.

That's pretty good. With the iPad 3 they sold 1.5 million WiFi models in the same amount of time. Now they've sold three million iPads which I presume consist of the iPad 4, iPad mini, and iPad 2.

Tablets are still a companion device. They will not be replacing laptops and desktops soon, but rather complementing them.

I remember when Apple products used to sell out across the country. Now they "practically" sell out.

As long as they keep selling laptops at good value then no.

It certainly is the future though.

I'm interested to see what the market is after 3-4 refreshes of Windows tablets/convertibles/w/evs.

I take issue with using science fiction to predict actual technological advance.

Moving past that, I have no doubt that computers will become more mobile, but iOS is not that device.

It can't replace OS X devices, because it wasn't built to do what they do.
Its a walled garden. In computer history, open platforms have tended to win.

That next gen device does not exist yet. Pretending that iOS is it, doesn't make it so.

Why? When you look at science fiction, it tells the story of what man hopes to achieve through technological advancement. Sometimes it works out, and sometimes it does not. Back in the 70's and 80's we couldn't have predicted that our computers today would be so incredibly advanced to the point that they dominate every part of our life. At the same time, some people predicted we would have hover cars and such by now, but that never happened. We're still stuck to the ground with our 4-wheel vehicles that run on gasoline.

My point is our perceptions of the future is what we push for. We don't always make it, and sometimes, we surprise ourselves in how we advance.

Also, I never said iOS was meant to replace OSX, although with windows 8, we are seeing the convergence of mobile and workstation computing, so the eventual combining of both computer formats is inevitable. Have you seen how much the Galaxy Note II can do? It is startling how powerful that phablet is.

I have several tablets and the only one use (about 3hrs a day) is my iPad 2 (on it now) Only had it 5 weeks and I already spent $30 plus on apps. The 3d medical apps are awesome.

Also, I went to the Apple store to checkout the mini and they only had one white in stock. I use the display for about an hour and it is pretty nice and really lite. I could not bring my self to buy the last little guy do to me getting my iPad 2 at Microcenter for $359... If it was around $269 then I would have grab it. Planning on getting iPad 4 soon, just waiting for Microcenter to get it in stock for $40 less.

The 3d medical apps make the iPad worth every dime alone. Nova elements and PBS just adds to it's worth. Even the bing app is excellent. The iPad has good apps and apps that actually work...

I still think Android has more potential than iOS, but iOS just works and all my Android tablets have nothing but buggy apps and the browser likes to close when it fails like it. Safari has yet to auto close and I only had one app freeze and that is batman, which needed to be updated...

My iPad build quality is excellent no backlight bleeding or screen/digitalizer coming off. My ASUS prime screen started falling off after 2 weeks and I only use it about twice because the browser like to close/crash. It also had way too much backlight bleeding.

My kindle fire has excellent build quality, maybe the best I seen of all Android tablet, but the Amazon UI really stinks, it's and insult to Android and the browser is useless...

I have a few more but they got left in the dust as Google push new version of Android out

The biggest mistake I made was avoiding apple to the end, do to me not liking there OS X operating system over Microsoft's operating system.

I cannot deny they got a winning tablet and top dog deserve to get treated as so.

Excuse my grammar, still getting used to the iPad keyboard and features...
