Kindly advice on my upgrade options

Thread Starter
Basically I currently have:
- AMD Phenom II x3 720 Black Edition (2.8GHz)
- Asus M4A785-M DDR2 mATX
- Team Elite 2x2GB DDR2 RAM
- GTX 260

Right now i'm planning to:
- Upgrade memory to 8GB DDR3
- Change to an Intel path

Situation:
- Current mobo doesn't support DDR3, and i don't want to buy DDR2 RAMs anymore due to several reasons. For one, DDR3 is way cheaper here in my country. (I already bought an 8GB G.Skill Ripjaw)
- It's about time I upgrade my motherboard anyway. USB 3.0 ports are a huge welcome.

My problem is:

- I'm currently torn on what to get, change to Intel vs staying with AMD path.
- Since i'm upgrading anyway, i'm thinking of switching to an Intel based system for a more secure upgrade path (based on what i've been reading on forums).
- I've already done some research and reading on the forums and i've set eyes on the following

Proc: Intel Core i3 - 3220 (3.3 GHz, Ivy Bridge?)
Mobo: Asrock Z77 Extreme4

I'd appreciate any advice on this:
- I am going for a budget of $200. But the Proc+mobo i've found above goes for ~$290 locally. I can stretch my budget for this, but i'm wondering if this choice is worth the price and good for the long run.
- Is it wise if I just choose to go for a AM3+ DDR3 mobo, and retain my current processor?
- Lastly, is it worth it to go for full ATX boards? The only advantage I see is the option for dual GPU setups.

I mainly use my PC for:
- Gaming (Diablo 3, GW2, LoL, HoN, TF2 etc)
- Photo & video editing

Additional:
- Planning to go multiple monitor setup in the future

Thanks in advance to OCN PC gurus out there! smile.gif

If you are not going to overclock, I would chose a more modest/cheaper asRock mobo to combine with the i3 3220. Good luck!

The FX-4300 and 6300 are far more sensible than the i3 given your desire to also do photo & video editing.

If I do decide to overclock, is the i3-3220 capable of being overclocked? sorry for the newb question, i'm only familiar with overclocking a gpu through software.

That's some solid information that I just learned, thanks.

Is there a K variant for i3?

Not currently. The first K is in the i5 range, and for a good reason.
i3s only have dual cores. i5s introduce the quad cores and multi-threading. Plus the K models are unlocked (overclockable).

I see, so if I were to compare i3-3220 vs an i5-3570k, I would get more bang for my buck for my purposes in the long run since I can overclock it?

Like stated earlier, it all depends on your uses. If you plan on going further into more demanding games than the ones you listed, cost-effectiveness would be in one such as the 3570K. If you're just doing the ones you mentioned and editing, an FX-based one may prove more handy due to the low cost and multiple cores. Of course, if you can shell out the dough, a stable 1155 mobo w/ 7-series chipset and a 3570K would be a very safe bet cause that'll get you a lot of performance that you won't have to upgrade anytime soon. Of course, if you're just sadistic like me, you may wait till the release of Haswell.

Thanks for the tip! Makes me want to hold on to my current rig for a little more longer for Haswell, and buy the 3570k+z77 cheap.

I'd like to have an upgrade with some future-proofing, hence my reservation against FX-based procs. I'm more of a mainstream gamer, if something interesting gets released I ocassionally jump to try it.
