Oh, I just placed an order for an XFX 7970 graphics card. Any opinions?

The XFX 7970 is an excellent card at the moment and is probably the best per dollar GPU you could get. That's a good decision.

get an i5 3570k and an asrock z77 extreme 4. will cost the same and will perform a lot better in gaming. the asrock board isn't a slouch. you can OC that bad boy to at least 4.5ghz and will completely decimate an overclocked FX-8350 not to mention the power efficiency difference is not even close.

However stated in the above quote, an i5 3570k would be a better per dollar CPU. It has been repeatedly stated elsewhere and is a known fact for those with CPU background knowledge, that a CPU's clock speeds and cores do not determine how fast or how well it performs. What matters is the architecture of the chip. If you would like to know more about CPU's and their architecture, I highly recommend that you watch TTL video review of the AMD FX8350. It may not be the same chip as yours, but if you watch the video you will understand why.

If its a gaming build go with the 3570k, plain and simple. Look at this review. Look at CPU gaming benchmarks at bottom of page!! 3570k has a big lead over AMD in gaming http://www.pcgamer.com/review/amd-fx-8350-review/

You guys act like the FX 8350 is a slouch. That is not the case. AMD does just fine in games and will not bottleneck any cards. My six core FX does just fine in games. Also, future games will be optimized for AMD piledriver cores, because the new consoles will have AMD in them.

I agree the 3570K is awesome for gaming and currently better but with the GPU he has it will do just fine. Also, more and more games are using more than just 4 cores, BF3, Crysis 2, crysis 3, Heck even Black ops 2 uses six cores.

Not saying AMD is better, just that from owning a 3570K and a FX-6300 both work fine for gaming. AMD is not as crappy as people make it out to be.

I never said the 8350 is a slouch. It actually scores much higher in many benches than the IB counterpart. But gaming is just not it's strong point, that's a fact. OPs main reason for the build is for gaming.

As for the upcoming consoles everything is still a rumor. It was stated that XBOX 720 was having problems with the AMD chips and is now going with an Intel 8core. Last I looked it is still rumored that PS4 will use a AMD quad core. http://www.gamasutra.com/blogs/TobyYoungberg/20121114/181588/Will_XBox_720_or_PS4_really_be_that_much_better_than_Wii_U.php

Hey I'm in favor for more CPU core utilization, I got a 6 core, 12 virtual cores with HT so I'm looking forward to the new consoles!

When I first decided to assemble my own PC abouta month ago I didn't just blindly buy the first CPU and motherboard I found on sale. I searched for and read every review or article that I came across and honestly a lot of benchmarks and reviews left me with the impression that the new FX chips were very good and were being offered at a great price. Frankly I never really gave a single thought to Intel vs AMD, I had no preconceptions what so ever. I've learned a lot in these last for weeks and perhaps the surprizing thing is that putting this thing together is not just a means to an end but the whole process has been ,mostly, way more interesting and fun then I ever thought it could be. Anyway I have what I have and I'd like to get the most I can out of it and I'd appreciate anyones advice and comments.

Sigh... Economy... Unfortunately I've had to make some budget cuts. For the price point I'm going for the 6300 eats everything else. Just as fast as I3 at stock, with potential to OC.

Also, does anyone know of a nice mATX AM3+ board? If I can, I'd like to use mATX for the space savings. One that overclocks nicely and has USB 3?

I might be stealing from Midgar just a little bit. (Shhh...) How's that rig working out for you?

Great, only complaint was that the boards VRMs (Regulates Voltage) overheats when overclocking past the 4.4GHz mark. I slapped a AMD fan on it and now Im sitting at 4.6GHz and the vrms dont overheat at all. With a little ingenuitly this board paired with a FX-6300 is a power house on the cheap.
