Dropped external Drive on the floor

Thread Starter
I dropped my External Harddrive on the floor yesterday. I tested it with HD Tune when I got to work and error scan gave me all green blocks. Although I could easily hear a "clickety click" sound that wasn't there before, atleast not noticibly.

I then tested it when I got to home, and it gave me almost only red squares, few yellow and one or two green ones, but then the test stopped due to an error. The read speed of it was also about 1,3MB/S, where on my work PC it was 30MB/S (work PC connected with USB 2.0, Home PC connected with USB 3.0)

However, when I took it out of its casing but plugged it in using the same Sata to USB adapter, it gave me 110MB/S on USB 3.0, which was what I got Previous days.

I copied what I had on it over to my internal harddrive, but it seems like some has become corrupted.

I guess I would need a new Harddrive now, or what do you think?

haha my hdd is way tougher then yours!
I dropped it on the ground and the i stood on it and it still works fine! /sarcasm although it did actually happen.

Can you run a smart test to see if and what is damaged which should help.
In the meantime backup everything

If you drop a drive and it doesn't appear damaged, you lucked out - backup everything immediately. Even if it worked initially (on your work PC), you should always expect flakey behaviour after dropping a hard drive. The damage has been done - once the internal drive diagnostics notice the damage, it'll not function properly anymore. Some damage (like a non-fatal head crash) can damage the head or coat it with small particles that prevent it from reading properly. That's not something you yourself can fix, so get your data off before the entire drive is unreadable.

so I have been thinking about getting a SSD for it instead of buying a HDD, doesnt need to be latest model, but garbage collectiong would be nice.

USB3.0 is 5GB/S (unless Turbo mode makes it higher?) so take that into account.

it has to be encrypted with Bitlocker due to work Domain Policy (sucks) so incase Bitlocker has issues with SSD's I would need one with compatibility with that.

Which SSD would you suggest?

I always fallback to the Crucial M4 for SSD recommendation. It's the only SSD that has an almost flawless record. If you want the least amount of headaches, get one of them. They're not the fastest or the cheapest, but they work.
