Sub-$200 headphone recommendations

Thread Starter
Hi all,

I'm looking for a pair of sub-$200 headphones. I have looked all over the internet but I don't find any people quite asking this question to satisfy my personal needs, and to be quite honest I value the opinions of OCN members more.

I mainly listen to Electronic music (Dubstep, DnB, House), however I do enjoy listening to artists such as Pink Floyd (inc. Roger Waters live), Metal such as Katatonia, Stone Sour, however I also enjoy listening to Blues/Folk guitar music from artists such as Martin Simpson, Bob Dylan.

As you can see, my music taste is very varied and I have seen headphones that are more well-adjusted to provide bass for the Dubstep end of the spectrum and more natural mid/trebles for the Blues end of the spectrum.

This will be my first pair of sort-of audiophile headphones and whilst I am on a budget I want to get something that caters for my music tastes. I can say, though, that I am more in favour of Electronic music sounding better as opposed to the other styles I listen to. Obviously I want to get a pair of good all-rounders but this genre would be favourable.

Is there a sub-$200 pair of headphones that will provide decent bass response for Electronic music whilst providing adequate sound for the other genres I listen to?

Furthermore, I don't like headphones that are too tight on your head - I wore a pair of my friend's Sennheiser HD 205s (I think they were 205s anyway), and found them much too tight on my ears. I am used to using Steelseries Siberia V2 headphones to game with on the PC and they are huge cans. I am not bothered about going out in public with these on so looking goofy isn't an issue really. I want ones that are going to be comfortable that I can listen to for hours. I love the fit of my Siberia's.

If you have any questions for me just ask - I am really looking for your valued opinion before spending my money. Throw them my way!

My great appreciation in advance.

EDIT: I seem to see everyone leading toward the M50s. Will these be adequate for my music tastes? Furthermore, if anyone owns a pair of M50s, would you mind measuring the section of each can that your ear sits in (i.e. the inner width and height of the can). I want to make sure they'd fit on my ears. I found a pair on eBay for $130 which seems like good value. Any thoughts?

I own the m50's and I have to say they are amazing.
If I find a ruler then I'll edit in the measurements, but they are pretty big so I doubt you'll have any trouble.

The M50s are a good choice in your case. I wouldn't mind recommending them.

Check out head-fi.org, but currently I'm in the same process of looking for new headphones... I'm contemplating on the AKG Tiesto K167($189) or any of the earbuds below.. These came out pretty recently, It's bass is comparable to the Denon AHD2000 which are ~$450, and the sound is clean comparable to the AKG q701 and the AKG K550s(~$299)

Nuforce NE-6 (sold out everywhere but might be able to get them on ebay)
Hippo VB (can only find these on ebay)
Hifiman RE-0 or RE-ZERO
Velodyne vPulse
SoundMAGIC E10

Not this model...some of the higher end models do. This headphone has an attached 3 foot cord and came with a ~10ft extension cord.

Thanks for the reply. I heard Ultrasone is pretty good for dubstep and has good bass quality.

P.S. Nice rig tongue.gif
