I'm currently using a Xonar Essence STX to drive my headphones and 2 Mackie MR5MK2's with the RCA outs. The card is fine for my cans, but I've run into an (apparently well documented, and known) issue with feedback when using the speakers.
According to Asus, it's an issue with their sound cards and PCI interference with Kepler. Fine and well, so I've decided to rework the sound setup and incorporate a Subwoofer while I'm at it.
Quality and final product trump price here, so I'm open for anything. Every time I look I seem to find conflicting information on how to properly do this--so I need some help.
First thought was to use a Receiver; from what I understand, the speakers would need to be run through a pre-out, since they are powered. (Please correct me if I'm wrong here)
A bit of searching, and I'm leaning toward a Yamaha RX V667. Picture of the outputs: (Click to show)
It has loads of pre-outs and can be had for pretty cheap.
Is a receiver the best way to go here, or am I missing an easier fix? My only caveat is that I want something that can change between speakers and headphones without swapping cables.
Questions:
What would be the best option as far as inputs--HDMI out from my 680 to the receiver? Analog out from the onboard audio on my Motherboard? (Realtek ALC898 on Rampage IV Extreme)
EDIT: A bit of reading tells me HDMI out from my 680 to the receiver is the way to go, again please correct me if this is wrong.
I appreciate any help here.
