Help. 1866 speed ram with AMD FX chip+board won't boot @1866

Thread Starter
Need some advice.
I have an ASROCK 990FX Extreme4 board with an AMD FX-8320.

I had CORSAIR Vengeance 16GB (2 x 8GB) 1600 CMZ16GX3M2A1600C10
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820233246

I was thinking since my board runs up to 2000 OC and the FX-8320 supports 1866 officially I'd buy faster RAM.

So I got CORSAIR Vengeance 8GB (2 x 4GB) 2133 CMZ8GX3M2X2133C9R
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820233276
when it was only $59 on a shell shocker deal.

I cannot get it to boot at anything higher than the 1600 setting in the BIOS.
It runs OC 1616, 1624 and so on if I set the CPU freq. higher but even if I run the CPU at stock 3.5GHZ and all stock voltages and bus speeds it will not boot at 1866. mad.gif

I tried every timing I can find on the chip sticker, in SPD, online and I left a message on the Corsair forum asking for advice but only replies say use timings on the chips (duh!).

Can someone recommend a 2x4GB, 1866 or 2000+ speed, low CASS (9) set for my board?
The ASROCK recommended memory guide is rather sparse for 1866 and above, only lists 2GB sticks (seriously, only 2G chips?) and ignores Corsair.

Change setting in Bios to XMP and manually input speed of 1866MHz and your stock timings and volts and see if that will work.

Did that.

Same no boot result.
Also have tried small voltage bumps of 1.55, 1.58, 1.60 (its 1.5 stock)

I may just return the RAM to NewEgg and try another model.

First off are you using the first 2x8GB set at the same time?
Secondly, sometimes you need a little bump on the IMC voltage(cpu/nb) for 4 sticks or large capacity sticks.

You have a new processor and new RAM,of course the approved list is going to be small. Post a CPUz memory and SPD tab screenshot, can't really give setting advice without it.

If I were you,I would have picked this set

I did not leave in the 16GB kit.
I am using only slot 2 + 4 as the manual suggests for 1 set of DDR3.

I did bump the voltage some. Maybe I need to bump more agrressively. They are rated 1.5v. Maybe try up to 1.65?
I'll post a CPUz tonight.

Thanks for trying to help me! I really appreciate it!

I think you misunderstood what redwoodz said..He said bump the CPU/NB voltage some. wink.gif
Try slopping up your timings a notch too. smile.gif

Here's my CPU-Z at all stock setup.

I can OC to 4.669GHZ at 1600 XMP CPU freq. @203 = 1624 and it runs fine and stable.

For now though I want to at least establish 1866 or higher at stock cpu + bus settings.
