And yes ... as a very regular editor/renderer of 1080p video ... I can say you will LOVE RAID 0. And yes, it is very near in most cases to a literal 2x of the speed of the base drive.

The differences between your drive choices should be marginal at best unless either particular make just has issues with RAID for some reason (which I would recommend researching thoroughly).

But yeah, 2x platter drives in RAID 0 can be very zippy.

I use 2x 600GB Velociraptors and avg about 250 to 270mbps. It is my boot drive and also my main content storage drive (it's only 1.2 TB but suffices for me). I use the Intel RAID controller on my P67 Sabertooth motherboard. Boot time is VERY fast ...around 15 seconds, I'd guess.

Windows Performance index or whatever reports the array as a single SSD drive, even though it's two platter drives in RAID 0... which makes sense as the array tests about as fast as low end SSD's.

All that said ...

A good imaging/backup routine is the most important part of the whole thing, especially when dealing with work related data. I do a nightly automated image to a 3TB drive that stays in my hotswap bay on front of my rig. Also, once a week, I do a manual disk clone (via Acronis True Image) to another 2TB drive that I keep on my shelf. Doubly redundant so that should the RAID fail I can just hot swap in the clone drive and boot and restore from my most recent daily image once I rebuild/repair the failed array.

Solid as a rock for a year now ... love it.

Ultimately, when I build a new rig in a year or so, I'll upgrade to a MB that supports RAID TRIM and will surely be running a dedicated 500GB to 1TB SSD RAID 0 array (with a similar backup strategy) but for now, the Velociraptors in RAID 0 are doing a bang up job.

Good luck.
