FX-6100 vs FX-4300 vs A10 5800K

Thread Starter
Hello all,

I'm building a cheap first time rig from scratch and have parts picked out, but I am unsure about which cpu and motherboard to pick. I've got an MSI 7870 hawk for cheap to go with it.

My budget will only allow ~$150 for the cpu and I have these choices.

FX-6100 - $120
FX-4300 - $134
A10-5800K - $135

I know the 6100 has 6 cores but I also know the 4300 and 5800k are Piledriver which is supposed to be a lot better. I have an am3+ and fm2 motherboard picked out I just dont know which way to go. I need this rig to play games for a couple of years at least. If theres any future cpu upgrades for each socket ill consider buying them if they improve enough so thats another thing I need to consider.

Thanks for the help

edit: I am not considering intel as I'd really like to get some experience overclocking and learn all about it. From what ive read there arent any i can overclock in my budget

Get the A10-5800K and the FM2 mobo and crossfire the iGPU with your GPU and play your games with faster FPS and enjoy!

Unless I am mistaken, APU's can only be crossfired with lower end gpus like the 6550 or something.

I am leaning towards the 4300 personally, though there might be 2nd hand options in your range.

From what I read, FM2 is future-proof with full support for the Kaveri HSA Fusion APU.

Dont get the A10 5800k since its onboard Radeon HD 7660D will be of no use because you cant crossfire it with the MSI 7870 your getting.
the FX 6 core will also beat the A10 at any cpu intensive application. http://www.anandtech.com/bench/Product/675?vs=699

I suggest you get the FX-6100 or FX-6300 and overclock to 4.5 ghz to make full utilization of your HD7870

It really depends on what you plan on playing. For the most part, you'll probably get higher clocks on the 4300, +IPC, but you'll have more cores with the 6100 (if you do anything highly threaded,) higher binning within its arch, but lower IPC. I'm kind of leaning toward the 6100, but maybe if you wait for a bit you could come up with the extra cash for a 6300? That's definitely what I would do.

I wouldn't get the APU if you already have a 7870.
