Asus Matrix Platinum @ 1240/1775 - keep it? - Page 2

I'll be gaming on a 120hz 2560x1440p monitor by the end of the month (fingers crossed), 60fps is no problem in any game - but hitting 100fps+ in games like Crysis 2, Witcher 2, BF3 will be challenging - probably need to turn off AA/HBAO

Which isnt a bad trade off.

How did you go about verifying your OC was stable? What software did you use, how long, what settings? I only ask as I have one I will be OCing this weekend.
I say return it.
Asus market their matrix card as being the best overclockers out there, hence the huge price premium. I find it insulting that their cards can't even hit 1300.
You could just get another xfx for 350$ and Xfire them.

I personally do Heaven on mad loops, BF3 single and multi and Crysis, if they don't show artifacts after about 4 hours of gaming then it's stable.

I welcome you future brother, it is a glorious view from up here on Mt. Pious. I warn you though that one 7970 is NOT enough for the high end games to hit 120 fps at our res but with a few modified highs and ultra combos on the settings you can get most games to run pretty much awesomely smooth while looking fantastic!!!!!!! thumb.gif

Ultimately, the choice is yours.

1300MHz will be tough for any 7970 to reach. You can buy ten 7970s and none of them may reach that mark. Early reviews of the Matrix definitely spoiled users as Asus may have sent binned samples to reviewers as a market ploy.

I use Heaven demo as a baseline, since it starts up quick and any aggressive overclocks should force artifacts to show up pretty early. Once im confident in Heaven, i fire up a game i actually play - right now L4D2 and turn vsync off. If thats stable for say an hour then im confident that its good to go for most games.

But i like to load up a really stressful game like Crysis 2 and play that for a bit. I use Afterburner with OSD monitoring turned on for
  • FPS
  • GPU clock
  • Mem clock
  • Fan speed

And keep my eye on fan speed and the gpu clock - ive noticed the card will actually throttle down on the fly (1270 <-> 1100 for example), then make a note of the tempurature of the time, and then look at any voltage fluctuations - thats how i determined that LLC 100% was best for me

I monitor using GPU Tweak ..at 1250 - 1265 its pretty good 95% of the time...so im pretty sure 1240 is 100% good in all games...hopefully now im at a stage where i can lower voltage a bit

Yeaaaa i sold my XFX because i needed 2 DVI outputs (was originally going to switch to Team Green and get a 670OC) - then 12.11 happened and screwed up my plans tongue.gif

I do also kind of find it insulting...with the next level prices, youd expect next level overclocks (since its not totally uncommon for reference 7970s to hit 1175-1200mhz). So now trying to get the best of both worlds, since i got a pretty good price for my reference xfx.

you know they say " a bird in hand is worth two in the bush ". Any HD 7970 doing 1200+ Mhz rock stable is very good. If your goal is to save money then get a Sapphire HD 7970 OC or Gigabyte HD 7970 OC for 400 bucks and overclock it. But if you are returning your card to get lucky and get a 1300 Mhz HD 7970 MATRIX PLATINUM its not such a good idea. On the contrary if you are not happy with fan noise, temps or stability at 1200 - 1230 Mhz then return your card and try another MATRIX . Other options include Sapphire HD 7970 Ghz Vapor-X and the MSI HD 7970 Lightning. both are high quality builds.
