This is so true, these cards start to suck so much more juice after a certain point it isn't even funny.

Any idea what the max safe 24/7 voltage for this beast might be. Linus tech tips says to crank it, but I dont know.

Thread Starter
Ya im not sure - i think the general rule of thumb is 20% of the default? So 1.25v = 1.44v - but i personally wouldnt go above 1.35v

I go by temperature, and the faster you clock these things - lower is better....so at my current speed of 1265mhz - i max out at 65C in Crysis 2. Other games i'm at around 55C (L4D2, League of Legends, Starcraft) which im quite comfortable with.

I juat hate how i GPU Tweak doesnt have an OSD monitoring like AB does...ive found that in some cases the gpu core throttles down (which could mean an unstable oc, or maybe memory error checking kicking in) so at that point i lower speed/voltage. At 1275mhz and 1.31v the core throttles down in Crysis 2 and the temp is about 70C so i can either try and crank it a bit more and see if it evens out..but would probably raise temps to 75C which i dont like.

Any other thoughts on this would be welcome.

the safe limit would be 1.3v. Not worth pushing voltage on your chip too much. you run the risk of damaging and/or reducing the life of the card.

Just purchased a brand new card myself. But, I'm having problems getting the card to 1200Mhz on the GPU. It shows artifacts over 1185Mhz when running 3DMark2011.
It does not matter if I give the GPU more voltage or not.

Have not changed much besides GPU clock/voltage so I would be grateful if someone could help me getting this card above 1200Mhz! Whats should VDDCI Voltage / Power target / Load line and VRM clock be at?

Maybe users could post their settings in GPU Tweak smile.gif

I'm just wondering if I should return the card, because I was really hoping for a better clock!

sometimes a gpu simply won't budge beyond a certain frequency no matter the voltage or the power target or whatever it's just how it is and you will have to deal with it smile.gif in the end you got a 7970 the fastest single gpu on the market !

i was in the same situation but my gpu hit 1200 core but won't budge beyond that so you can return it but you can end up with a worse chip

I don't blame you if you return it. I bought my first one and it wouldn't budge over 1185 either, so I took the chance and ordered another one in hopes for a better overclock, but nope, 1200 was the limit no matter the settings.

I ended up purchasing a Devil 7990 which should be here tomorrow.

It's not that I wasn't happy with the actual 7970, it was the fact that I felt insulted by the premium price they're charging over other 7970's with similar overclocks. What's the use of all the extra features if you can't make any use of it? Yes it's the silicon lottery, but when they supposedly cherry picked the gpu's for their "Platinum" version of the Matrix, you expect better.

Hahaha I bought an *open-box* Devil 7990 that popped up on Newegg 2 days ago for $799. It was the only open box one they had in stock, so I'm surprised it was still available by the time I saw it..

Waiting patiently for it to arrive tomorrow! wheee.gif
