HDD life

Thread Starter
Hi all

I was just musing upon the future life of my hard drives (about 5000 hours young, most of them), when I realised that the supposed number of operating hours manufacturers advertise are nowhere near the warranty in years. Most claim to be able to last 1M hours (eg: http://www.hgst.com/tech/techlib.nsf/techdocs/C5C895A725AC713E862571D5004E4EDB/$file/Deskstar_E7K500_DS.pdf)which comes to about 114 years and a month, but obviously the warranties are far less than that. Now I know this is an "MTBF" value so under heavy load it is significantly reduced, etc, etc, but it still sounds way off. Anyone know why?

Hype over substance. If they warranteed their hype, they would not make a penny.
