Any problems with psu extensions?

Thread Starter
I haven't made many posts on the site yet, so if this is in the wrong place I apologize.

Does anyone have problems using extensions in their case? I ask because I was having instability on a rampage iv extreme. I noticed the voltages were out of spec on the 5V and 3.3V rails. I don't remember the 5V, but the 3.3V was about 2.6 I thought my psu was bad, but a multimeter showed it was fine at about 3.328. I removed my main atx extension and my one 12V extension and the motherboard reports the same voltages as my multimeter now. Also, stability has returned. I thought it was the cable, but when I tried 2 more brands, and they did the same thing, though the voltage drop was slightly different.

Anyone else ever have these problems? I have a friend telling me I need to RMA the board, which I don't think is right since it works perfectly without the extensions.

I use extensions for all of my cables and I've never experienced the trouble you have.

Not much help but just thought I'd let you know.

Yeah, that's the thing. I've seen many many builds with them and the people don't have issues. I do wonder if some people are having fluctuations but don't notice. I honestly wouldn't have noticed if it wasn't for the fact I would crash under heavy power draw. I found one person on this site that had a similar issue, but now I can't find the thread again...

I noticed your pics. Are those bitfenix extensions? The main atx extension looks just like one of the ones I had. Also, I love the sleek look of your build.

It may be worth mentioning that you appear to be using considerably less power than I am. I'm running 3 hard drives, 4 ssds, (was 2 GTX 690's but I sold them), a water pump, 2 ram fans, and 9 case fans. Maybe using more power makes me more susceptible to unstable power?

Thank you thumb.gif

Yeah they're Bitfenix Extensions. You could be right that the high power draw is just too much for the extensions and causes instability mad.gif

All DC power will have a voltage drop over distance in a cable. This is why USB, HDMI and other data cables have a maximum length. Test your extensions by putting a multi-meter across each of the wires (set to Ohms) and see what the resistance of each wire is just to be sure of no defects. Thicker wiring will help to alleviate power drop over distance, as will shortening cables as much as possible. You might consider adding thicker gauge wire for those parts of your system where the current draw is the heaviest, or adding additional power wires to each separate device.

Ok, so thank you. I don't know why it never occurred to me to test for resistance...

On all three sets of cables, there's one or two that have a resistance of 1.4 Ohms or thereabouts. I don't think it's a coincidence that on one of them, the sleeving has actually melted a little towards the connector. The rest of the wires have .1 or 0 registering on the multimeter. This appears to be the problem. As I found a site for lengths of cable, guage, and current to calculate the voltage drop and it's pretty close to what I was seeing. I also apparently have the worst luck possible in buying extensions. Each set had a mix of 4 pin, 6 pin, 8 pin and the main atx cables. Each set had at least 1 problem cable in it. Weird, and I still don't trust extensions unless I do this test on each wire now.

im using a +12 ext right now and have for 3 years problem free maybe the ones your using are getting old and need to be replaced.

I got them last December when I built the computer, but who knows how long they were in storage or what conditions before I got them. Maybe one got bent the wrong way when I installed them, I just don't know. Things were only really bad under heavy load/benching, which does make sense as there would be a larger voltage drop then due to the resistance. With so few problems like this coming up, I do feel like I should probably play the lottery.
Melted sleeving is a sure sign of you are trying to pass too much current through the wire. It may have been messed up before you got it and thereby caused the spot to get hot, or it may not have. Definitely look into replacing that wire with a heavier gauge and consider splitting some of the devices off to another power cable.

You're using a RIVE, yes?

Have you plugged in both the 8pin and 4pin ATX power cables? You mentioned that you were using 2x GTX690's, so did you have the 6pin PCIe power cable plugged into the board? How about the 4pin Floppy Power for the RAM? I would guess that at least some of the problems could have been reduced by using ALL the power connections on the board, as you're right, you were pushing a TON of power through the thing....
