Recommend an AVI to MP4 converter

Thread Starter
Like the title says im looking for a converter so i can get some home videos transferred for storage. What program should i use to convert these videos?

Im really looking for MP4 for compression and the ability to play it back on my bluray player.

Thanks!

handbrake is by far the easiest and best.
VLC can also transcode your files into MP4.

Hmm so i used handbrake, its fast and does an OK job but the video seems to lose a lot of quality. I can see a lot of lines in it after its converted. Any ideas?

I myself am no pro with it but Handbrake does have a ridiculous amount of tweaking and adjustment that can be used to clean and optimize your conversions. May want to check their forums for more info.

Personally I use Freemake for my conversions if I'm not terribly worried about quality. It's free and really couldn't be any simpler to use.

When using handbrake there are tabs for different settings. Under the video one there is a sliding scale for quality. Mine at default reads RF:20. Increasing and decreasing this results in better or worse quality with a setting of 0 being lossless. Hope this helps.

There are plenty converters on web. I have tried several and these are the ones that I can recommend: Freemake Converter, AVI Video Converter by DVDVideoSoft, Any Video Converter. Quite good and reliable.
