Smallest, durable mITX rig you can build me

Thread Starter
Having only a stock, non-gaming laptop at school really limits my ability to adequately enjoy games at school, so I'm looking to build a really tiny mITX rig to throw on my desk, or under it, and have something with substantial power.

So far I was looking at pairing an i3-3225 with the ASRock Z77E board, a set of the Samsung RAM everyone here loves (and I already have a set of in my home desktop), and the ASUS GTX 460 in my desktop as well. Now I just have a few questions, as I'm not too familiar with Intel's performance on the lower end. Would this set up be enough to play GW2 at Medium (let's assume 1080) at <30 FPS?

For a case I was looking at the SG05 with the 450W PSU already in it. It seems to be the smallest mITX case I can find, and it comes with a PSU, which would help offset some of the cost. I live near a Microcenter so the CPU and mobo would be ~$240 out the door. I don't think or know if I need to upgrade to the 3570K, but please list all options you can reasonably come up with.

The i3 won't be a limit to the GTX 460 at 1080p - don't forget that enclosure will require a slim DVD drive if you plan on having an optical, but it will all definitely pack a punch in a small size.

So do you think it would be good for GW2 at medium/high, and game like Spec Ops, Arkham Asylum/City, DXHR, and other less intensive, but still more recent PC titles? I could get it up and running for about $500 with 4GB of RAM, which should be plenty for this kind of system, I was just worried about the i3 limiting game performance.

I've got a similar setup, but the 460 is definitely the choke point in the rig you're describing. I'd say at very least get a 560ti, if not better. The 460 is going to be quite the bottleneck.

Also if you go with an i3, don't waste your money on Z77. You can't overclock anyways, so save $50 and go with an Asrock H77M-ITX

I went with an i3-3220 and a 660ti, and from the very little GW2 I've played, I don't recall dipping below 60fps @ 1080p. Not a game I play often, so take that with a grain of salt.

What motherboard?

You could buy a 3570k and a Gigabyte H61 ITX for (80+190-50) or ~230ish after tax
post #6 of 41
have you checked if that psu will have the right connections for the 460?

6+8 as standard, good enough for a HD 7950...

Well the bundle from Microcenter puts the Z77E at $105, rather than $150, as long as I get it with the i3-3225, 3570K, or 3770K. It's a lucky break really. I'm trying to keep the budget down, unless I want to ask for components for Christmas, which might be the case anyway.

That deal also works with the Asrock H77M-ITX thumb.gif $54 after the discount.

Would that be a suitable enough to game on? I assume so because I thought a lot of people got H77 when SB first came out. That's a crazy good price for everything.

EDIT: When did Intel start making the i3's have HT? I just noticed it's got 4 threads on a dual core. That certainly eliminates my worry about bottlenecking the 460, I just hope it can handle

EDIT: And the SG05 is a good choice for a case to support being carried back and forth a few times a year to school, and several times a summer to my grandparents house? It's literally the smallest mITX case I could find.
