thats overall....not x86/64 aka NOT THE DESKTOP market
that includes mobile and desktop
and i def dont trust wiki (as much as i love wiki to death its very inaccurate)
heck it includes unix in the other category
and there are no mention of dual boots (aka if soem some buys a desktop with windows even if that user wipes that desktop and installs linux it counts as windows..or dual boots count as windows) makign it a very bias chart
(double checked this with the sources from wiki..no dual boot frown.gif )

Sounds stupid but I still hear complaints about them in the Linux world. If they had as good as Nvidia's reputation (which supposedly isn't that good anymore) in the Linux driver department I would buy the 65Watt Quad Trinities I've been salivating over.

Arch Linux people wrote their own Catalysts and toolkits. And they are actually not bad at all. I might try to clock my 6850 on them for funzies.

On topic... man, that is some sad news. Hopefully Linux community won't be hit too hard by the ripple effects of this...

But, but, we are all jumping ship to Linux because of windows 8 right?
As much as I try to find a use for Linux, it escapes me to just how much usefulness Linux really has. Not only because of the majority of applications for Windows, but also the lack of any real support on Linux. If it had applications that were worth it for me as right now, I'm kind of working as a music producer, then gladly, I would use it but the applications on Linux are somewhat less than that of those on Windows...

What's with all the talk about graphics cards in this thread?

A quick gander at the AMD OSRC website makes clear what they do (or did, anyway.): OS optimizations for new processors and new OSes. (i.e. Thread scheduling, performance checks, virtualization...etc.)
The acronym "GPU" doesn't appear even once on their site. Their work was specifically related to CPUs.

And how the hell are they going to discern dual boot systems? Unless they launched a massive survey (which costs a crap ton of money and is virtually useless), there's no way to accurately know.

Regardless, the Linux marketshare is significantly less than AMD's current desktop marketshare, and it would be suicide for AMD to drop Windows support and go Linux only. Dropping Windows support will also make dual boot not viable on AMD.

I though distros like Ubuntu Studio[has lots of support by being an official Ubuntu fork] or ArtistX seemed like a great for that goal? O_o Of course I am not a music producer so I could be dead wrong here.

I always thought that the major problem of Linuxes was the gaming industry? I was actually going to study that for myself in few days as its been ages since I played games and I wanted to put a clean Ubuntu on a powerful system and see if anything changed in Linux gaming department [hoping to brute force my way here hehe].

P.S. I agree that if AMD even thinks about dumping windows now, they will sign their own death warrant. But dropping linux is not smart either as it means loosing support of "underdog/DIY" market that tends to like Linux.
