[TR] AMD shutters German Linux lab, gives devs the axe - Page 5

It sucks, but honestly, its understandable.

AMD is hemorrhaging sales to Intel in the CPU department.

Their GPUs beat Nvidia's, but gamers are too stubborn and short sighted to realize this (and to a degree, are locked into nvidia due to developer's stupid choice to support Physx and CUDA rather than open alternatives).

They can't really afford to waste money on linux. its a profitless platform (at the moment anyway).

AMD may beat Nvidia but Nvidia still has the better department. I don't know many companies that would openly work with game developers to get (as much as) a 40+ fps boost. That makes Nvidia for Linux and the Steam platform a big contender. Not to mention if Valve DOES do a Linux box (dun dun) the hardware choice is going to be obvious bringing a huge amount of sales. Not only would Valve enthusiasts (there are plenty) but Linux enthusiasts as well. If AMD had been on par with Nvidia in that department, they could have potentially made a lot of money. Sad really.

According to reports, only one small division of open source developers has been spared, with the team that develops open source drivers for AMD's graphics processors and APUs (accelerated processing units) unaffected by the closure.
Quote:
In addition, AMD remains a Gold member of the nonprofit Linux Foundation, which suggests that its involvement with the open source OS is far from over. ®

Also there's a huge update at the end that states that most of you didn't read the source.

It's a shame that the collective speculation here is so negative.
