What would be the ultimate yet not ridiculous gaming build?

Thread Starter
My friend wants me to suggest parts for his gaming build but he has a rather excessive budget so I don't really know where to start. He knows he will be using the Coolermaster Storm Stryker but not anything else. Any suggestions on the following parts:
  • CPU
  • CPU cooler (no water cooling just air cooling and closed loop stuff)
  • Motherboard
  • Graphics card (no more than two)
  • Hard drive(s)/SSD(s)
  • RAM
  • Fans
  • PSU
  • Sound card
What I'm thinking: Warning: Spoiler! (Click to show)
  • CPU - 3930K
  • CPU cooler - *Not sure*
  • Motherboard - Rampage IV Extreme
  • Graphics card - 2x Sapphire 7970
  • Hard drive - WD Caviar Black 2TB (he doesn't need much storage space)
  • SSD - 2x Samsung 840 Pro 256GB in RAID 0
  • RAM - 32GB Corsair Vengeance (1866)
  • Fans - *Not sure*
  • PSU - Corsair AX1200i (overkill but who cares tongue.gif)
  • Sound card - *Not sure*
Would love to hear your guys' thoughts! thumb.gif

Your build is overkill. Here: http://pcpartpicker.com/p/mRvl

You say the "Ultime Gaming PC", but yet you put in a i7, which doesn't help gaming in anyway. Overkill MoBo, stupid amount of RAM, no need for crossfire, and a stupid PSU. How come people have money to blow like this? It's amazing seeing as he wants a build for $2000, and people who are in Africa don't have a cent, I find it amazing. Anyway, my build will max out all games, no need for overkill stupidity.

Excessive budget?

- CPU: i7-3820

- Mobo: RIVE

- Heatsink: Thermaltake Water 2.0 Extreme, Phanteks TC14PE, or Thermalright Silver Arrow SB-E

- RAM: 4x4GB Samsung 1600MHz CL11 1.35v RAM

- Video card: 2-3x MSI 7970 Lightning/Sapphire 7970/Gigabyte 7970 Windforce

- SSD: 2x256GB Samsung 840 Pro/Plextor M3 Pro/OCZ Vertex 4

- Sound Card: HT Omega Claro or Asus Xonar Essence or external DAC/Amp like the Fiio E10 or one of the nice DIY kits

- PSU: Seasonic Platinum 860w/1000w, XFX ProSeries 1000w, Kingwin Lazer Platinum, Rosewill Tachyon, PC Power and Cooling Silencer MkIII

- Fans: Cougar Vortex, Noiseblocker eLoop, Silverstone Air Penetrator, Noctua NF-F12/NF-P12, Phanteks, Scythe AP15, or something along those lines.

I know it's overkill but his budget was in excess of £2500, if I was building a good price/performance build I wouldn't have a problem. I'm good at that tongue.gif

Anything above 2000 becomes stupid.. Going over 2000 is a bad idea, you can do anything with a 1500, tell him that.

Reminds me of a build that my friend wants.

For gaming go with:

i7 3770k
Asus Maximus Formula V ThunderFX
2x ASUS Direct CUII HD 7970
Corsair AX860i - once it comes out.
Samsung 16GB Wonder RAM (if you can get it).
NZXT Switch 810
NZXT Sentry LXE fan controller
Either a Corsair H100/H100i or Noctua NH-D14
2x Corsair GTX 240 RAID 0
2x WD Caviar Black 2TB (pretty loud drives).

There is your build.

EDIT:

This. I would spend the 500 on a custom water loop if it was my money. But as you said, no water loops. frown.gif

How about getting a cheaper build and buying a great monitor? Also, on that budget, no sound card is stupid.

I am bad with sound cards. I don't think them to be necessary (don't hate me!).

Why go with a 3930k? I would not get anything above a 3770K for a gaming build, and would recommend the 3570k. What monitor will he be running? What resolution and refresh rate? I would go with 2x 7950s. For the ram I would go with the samsung wonder ram.
