HD 7950 getting low fps in WoW - Page 2

Something must be wrong - have you done a clean install, using Driver Sweeper in safe mode in between driver installs? Our 7970 at 1100/1575 does very good fps at 1440p with everything maxed out AND additional shadows, spell detail, and other options added via the config file.

P.S.: make sure you enable LUA error reporting - bad addons can cause fps drops.

Also see my edited post above for additional troubleshooting. Try the latest Catalyst profiles too (though they shouldn't make much of a difference). In all seriousness, you should not have any issues with WoW fps with your card and at that overclock level. Something is incorrect somewhere (settings/corrupted files/etc/some faulty hardware.) Have you run standard benchmarks such as Heaven 3.0 to determine if your card is acting up or isolate the issue to WoW?

The 70ish percent usage is normal, not sure why since it clocks to max but doesn't run at 99% usage like when benchmarking. I've spent tons of time trying to get the AMD cards to run this game better, tried every trick in the book, google'd for hours. Don't rip your hair out trying to fix it because its just the way it is. AMD is good for everything except WoW. And yes, I used the 12.11 drivers. With Nvidia it would NEVER drop below 60fps even with max SSAA and 80 people on the screen. But on AMD with 4x MSAA I get down to low 40s sometimes. It usually sits around 50-80 but it is not stable. Very playable though in the end.

Btw I just noticed you are using a FX-6100. My new build had a FX-8120 and even with a gtx 680 the game ran poorly even down into the low 30s. When I switched to my intel 3570k I got more than double the fps. WoW is VERY cpu dependant and does not use multi cores very well. So "and I mean this in the nicest way possible" you basically built a machine that is all around terrible for this particular game. Your setup will be just fine in everything else, just not WoW.

A couple tips to get it to run better with your setup, drop shadows 1 or 2 notches, drop viewing distance down 1 notch, drop water down to fair. Everything else can stay at Ultra. Thats what I did with my 7870 / fx-8120 combo to make it acceptable. Hope this helps.

Nividia Gigabyte GTX 580 SOC Windforce-running UNDERCLOCKED @684 Mhz GPU clock/820 Memory Clock
Intel Core 2 Extreme QX 9650 UNDERCLOCKED @ 2.66 GHz
=======================================================
(FPS capped @ 60, 1920X1080 ULTRA i.e. ALL SETTINGS AT MAX AVAILABLE SETTING)

60 FPS in 5 man heroics
30-50 FPS in Pandaria
54 FPS in the Shrine of Seven Stars (very crowded)

35-60 FPS in 25 man raids (running stock @ 3.0 GHz)

I really can't see why people OC their CPUS & GPUs to play WoW. Really, I don't. WoW is an ancient game that can run at ULTRA even on OC'd Core Duos. My Northwood Pentium 4 laptop can still run MoP.

I know that everyone and their little sister suggests that you should spend like $1k to get the latest INTEL CPU and overclock it to 5 GHZ to get good FPS at WoW, however, in my experience the GPU matters as much or more. I am very happy with my QX 9650 performance, I am able to play the game maxed out with no slows, freezes or lag of any kind and with pretty natural, fluid motion.

First screenie is 54 FPS at the Shrine of Seven Stars (very crowded)
Second screenie is from a 25 man raid (44 FPS)

P.S.: My Core 2 Extreme became 5 years old this November.

P.S.2: I underclocked my CPU simply to prove wrong the "CPU PUSHERS" who say that in order to play WoW at ULTRA settings and decent FPS you need to have the latest INTEL CPU overclocked over 5 GHZ. The same people also say that GPU makes no difference in WoW, however, I can assure you that there is a BLOODY HUGE DIFFERENCE in WoW between my old AT RADEON HD 5830 and my Nividia GTX 580. The difference is BLOODY HUGE.

It's your processor that is causing the low fps.For whatever reason wow hates AMD chips.I put my 7970 in my AMD rig and saw low GPU usage.
@ Arxontas

If your happy with those fps then all the power to you. However the screens you took was with almost nothing going on and you still had sub 60. Take the top screen for example with 44 fps standing around. I get almost double that during the fight with everyones spells going off. If I was standing where you were with what you have on that screen, I'd push around 120fps. You also mention 30-50 fps in Pandaria. Sorry man but to me that would suck. I notice stutter at 55, so keeping a solid 60 in my case matters.

I'm not hating at all, I'm just saying that the powerful intel cpu's are worth it, especially in this game. You have a great card for it though and are correct that Nvidia is much better than Radeon in this case. Btw I also have nothing overclocked. All stock gtx 680 / i5 - 3570k build.
