[Solved] Average loads way beyond 100%

Anyone else notice this? I'm running boinc and Folding@Home just for demonstration.

Rigs i7 3820, there are four cores and eight threads. Shouldn't the make load be 8.00?



Don't get me wrong, I like a machine that can do it's 110%, but this is just ridiculous tongue.gif

*%CPU relative to a single thread:

279+62+61+61+58+57+56+53+51+29+6+5+5+4+4+2 = 793%

8*100% = 800%

You're system is actually missing 7% usage on one of it's cores :P

If while running 'top' you press '1', it will show you the load stats of all the cpu threads.

Load average has to do with CPU Queue and the number of processes on each thread; not utilization between 0 and 100%; furthermore the 3 numbers represent average load over the past 1, 5 and 15 minutes respectively. CPU Utilization shows you an integer value between 0 and 100%, and is generally more human-readable.

As stated above pressing "1" on your keyboard while viewing top you can see utilization of each individual core. The 7% of one your CPU cores not being utilized is likely all overhead, Boinc, Folding@Home, and a GUI as well as TOP wanting to regurgitate information will all utilize some CPU and some overhead, and each of those threads communicates with eachother which creates more overhead. Still not an entirely accurate depection of the picture, but this is a normal looking load spread for a system enduring that kind of usage.

Htop provides much more human readable top output, and it has pretty colours and nifty bars for our brains to be entertained by.
